Of what use is an HDMI port?

Does anyone actually connect their camera to a flat screen?, or am I missing something like Live view on a 46" flat screen for the pervs :),,,, though if you can Live View for macro on a massive screen fair comment.

Interesting review although not all that positive for Canon. The sample lab pics were a bit surprising as is showed that both the 5D and the Sony out resolved the 40D by quite a bit. Also, their real life noise pics were pretty worthless. They are too small. All the cameras looked the same.

My review of the review:

Good points
Superb handling and 6.5fps shooting. - Yes, this is nice.
Great build & improved weatherproofing. - Thanks Canon!
Live View and PC remote control. - Live view would be nice. PC control has been around since Adam used his first DSLR.
Effective anti-dust during our test period. - Test period of how long? What conditions? Did you even change the lens?

Bad points
Resolution not a big step-up. - You noticed? This site obviously buys into the MP wars.
Default settings benefit from sharpening. - So up the sharpening in camera.
Screen doesn’t have VGA resolution. - You want VGA resolution? Add another $200 for a nicer LCD. Heck, it doesn't have 1920x1200 either for that fact.
No HDMI port and tough rivals. - Besides the HDMI port just being plain stupid, how are these two negatives even remotely related. That's kind of like saying "No HDMI and doesn't flush my toilet."

I am getting so tired of online reviews. Any monkey with a keyboard can sit down and pound out the most idiotic crap ever. A review consists of a detailed description of what the camera has and how it performs. Saying no HDMI port as a negative isn't useful, but confusing. The specs from Canon never stated anything about having an HDMI port. Kind of like when people post a review of the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS and say as a negative that it was pricey. Did you not notice the price BEFORE YOU BOUGHT IT? Was it sticker shock when you saw your credit card bill? Exactly what did you expect to pay?

A review should go into detail about the camera. Then list the good points (things advertised that work well) and the bad points (things advertised that don't work well or at all) and then maybe an "Other Things to Consider" section such as "Consider these competitors' cameras during the search for your DSLR..." Otherwise I could write a review about my 1998 Ford Escort, "Doesn't have the acceleration of a 2007 Corvette!"

I may be wrong, but I'd imagine they bring up HDMI becuse the D300 has an HDMI port. It might have been useful for them to mention that if they are comparing it to a D300 though.

Well, there is a complete multi-page review of the 40D on the site that goes into far more detail and basically addresses each of your concerns. So maybe you should check it out as opposed to reviewing the review just on its "good points/bad points" section.

We enjoy looking at my wifes pics from her G7 via the SD card on our 58" Panasonic plasma. HDMI is here to stay for quite a while. Certainly is not a bad feature. Many flat panel plasmas can use the pics as screen savers, we do ours. What better place to see your pics than framed above the fire place on the flat panel . We love it. I look foreward to the day Canon starts including it....Esp the 5Dmk2

lol ... hey overclock ... i think you have burn you processor!! lol. I think this review was fair in the absolute, and fair to canon. As i said in another post, what would really be stupid is to make a review of the 40D WITHOUT taking in account what the competitors offer. ignoring what is on the market and praising canon blindly is useless i think.

in this case, other camera have HDMI. Fact. whether you need it or not is irrelevant but a review need to include this info. same goes for the LCD.

that is exactly what the guy did and how its review is structured.

Have you guys even see the videos of people using the HDMI port in studio for other cameras? This is NOT a BS feature. There are a great many uses for this technology and paired with a recorder capable of recording HDMI input it's like adding a TV studio camera in a DSLR package. Obviously its not going to be a deal breaker for a great many people but this feature is just in its infancy and I dont think a lot of you have looked beyond this feature on paper.

Canon 20D, Nikon D300 & assorted stuff...

I feel another multi hundred post flame war a brewing. ;) time to move the lawn chair over here, break out the jiffy-pop and wait for a little heat. The other flame wars have cooled considerably. Hmm.. now what could I post to heat this one up a bit. Let me see. How about.

Sony is going to kick Canon’s a$$ because of their in body IS and this review proves it. Canon is toast. ;):)
