EOS XTi Disable Flash?

When I might want the flash I know how to get it. But I almost never use it.

The Canon PowerShot S50 has a way to save your settings in C mode. With that I never had to worry about the flash--I had it disabled and saved that way.

Don't see a way to do this with the EOS XTi. Seems you just have to remember to press the flash button on the side and even then I'm not sure it'll stop the flash. I see ways to save in the P mode and others, but not a way to make sure that flash won't fire.

I'm sure there's something I'm missing.

what mode are you shooting in ? Most of the preset modes (sports / portrait etc..) are pretty much an "AUTO" in which the flash will fire when it deems necessary, in order to control when the flash fires, you should be in one of the "letter modes" (Tv, Av, M etc..), that way you will always tell the flash when to fire. Hope that helps.

hey recon.. i would try shooting in manual. i hate using a flash. but only do it if i really really have to. if you shoot in manual. the flash will not come on unless you push the little flash button on the side of it.

i have learned only to shoot in manual now. i like the freedom of it, and i have more control over everything that i want to do.

isn't there an auto mode w\out flash right on the main dial? Spin it around the whole way, and it shoots auto mode but wihtout the flash..as far as I know that mode is there just to disable flash...

should be the last setting on one end of the dial

auto mode judges for you.. if it thinks it needs flash.. then it will pop up. thats why i suggest shooting in manual.. much easier and better photos when you get the gang of it.

In “P”, the flash will only trigger when you pop it up and it won’t pop up until you press the flash release button on the side. BTW, you can also use the other modes Av, Tv, M, and Dep. In those modes the flash will not trigger unless you specifically request it to do so.

right, but there is an auto mode with disabled flash right on the dial..spin it the whole way around..I've always shot with that mode and the flash enver comes up..it even has the flash lightning bolt crossed out on the picture on the dial wheel. I've shot in every light setting you can think of and it never pops the flash.

I'm using for now the "P". Haven't actually taken a shot yet--was trying it out with an old Canon 32MB CompactFlash that's full--as I await the SanDisk 2 GB Extreme III CompactFlash Card.

Like to see that little circle with the flash symbol "x'd" out.

Thanks, I found that disabled flash mode on the dial. Hmm. I shoot almost exclusively in RAW.

Will try this. As it is at the moment the lenses don't auto focus anyway. I think that's just that I don't have a proper card yet. Got a 128MB Viking but will not try that for fear of ruining things. I'll wait for the SandDisk.

make sure when you buy a new card.. do not buy from ebay.. a lot of them are fake.

i have a 4gb lexar.. and it was about 100 dollars at a camera store.. but i am very pleased with its performance. its fast, and i like it btter than my sandisk one.

best buy has them, camera stores.. any place really. but i hope you find what your looking for, and soon.

shooting in RAW with such a small card must not last for too long.

i shoot in raw and jpeg, and i can get just under 500 shots onto one card.

No way. Hope I did well by ordering from Amazon. The full order states:

"SanDisk SDCFX3-2048-901 2 GB Extreme III CompactFlash Card".

I love RAW. It picks up data from the trees in the foreground of a moonlit night.

Just wipe one of the cards you have and start taking pics with it. No need to wait for an official "SanDisk" card, any old CF card will work just fine in your camera.

Your Compact Flash card shouldnt stop the focus from working at all

check the left hand side of the Lense Barrel and make sure you havent inadvertantly flicked the AF(AutoFocus) switch to MF(manual focus)
apart from that your using a really old lense or your lense is broke
