Thoughts on this one? I've been trying to give my black and whites a less polished feel to them so they didn't look so... "digital" I guess is the word

I like the conversion myself, and I still chuckle a bit at using a 5D to produce images that look like they were taken on something 40 years old in the bottom bin at the flea market ;)

Still I like the effect, what's everyone else think?

I like it. That's a nice amount of grit and a nice conversion. I laugh too at times when I'm using Photoshop to "rough" my images up. The tools of the trade..

It could be taken further, I think. Add more schmutz through channels would help.

It is hard to tell at this resolution. Can we see a 100% crop from 2 different places within the image?

I like the amount of 'noise' added but not so sure on the toning....were you going for a selenium look?

I like it. I need to be able to think more like this. All of my stuff looks too "digital". This has some soul.

What do you mean? I'd love to try it, unfortunately I never found the schmutz tutorial ;)

I could post that from home, sure.

Thanks Roger.

To be honest, I was just going for a duotone, I don't know the characteristics of nothin ;)

Although you did give me a good idea which is to look at some actual film pritns and try and recreate the toning on those. Now and again it shows that I've never even seen a piece of celuloid up close ;)

Yeah I can't quite explain what it is but there's a certain look that for whatever reason conveys something entirely different because it's roughed up. It's as though there's more emphasis on the photograph as a thing because it has it's own characteristics, rather than just the photograph as a capture of the subject, if that makes any sense.

There's a british photographer named Andy Farrington I've talked with alot who is IMO the master of this sort of stuff. Alot of his photos have a really gritty feel to them while still being incredibly beautiful, and he uses a 5D and 85 1.2 for most of his stuff, so alot of the grit is added post process. Mind you, the guy does use some film and has a holga which he uses from time to time, and those most certainly don't need any help looking a bit rough :P

Rich interesting that you should be exploring these issues, I think film is having a bit of resurgence from a professional point of view also. I just read an interview on the 'strobist' blog with an Austin based tog, Kirk Tuck where he describes using film for the look and feel. The article made me want to get my medium format gear sent over lol.

I'm not picky enough to know how close it comes to looking like film, but I really like the effect of the grain, and it's a nice shot!
