partial comments from a post on the APRIL SMWYG thread:

..........Now, this brings me to something new I'm going to initiate starting this week. The initial SMWYG thread has been left open for the weekly photos, questions and comments on the current photos.

The competitions have been very close lately with some photos not winning the week by a hair's breadth.

The judges on this contest are good photographers/artists with varying years of experience. If you wish to have comments on your photos (i.e. what made us vote the way we did...or what could be done to improve it) simply include the words : Judges COMMENTS with your entry and we will attempt to include comments after the end of the week's judging (and for the monthly judges, the end of the month's judging, if they wish).

Again, the goal of this contest is to encourage people to shoot more and become more skilled with the the gear they have, rather than thinking that better gear will get them a better shot...

one of my recent favorite shots using a simple P&S:

IMAGE: http://lcimages.zenfolio.com/img/v1/p73438391-4.jpg

Thank you for your participation and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to post them on the SMWYG thread :)

ATTENTION PLEASE

Some of the judges have asked, for the sake of impartiality, if you would not put watermarks on the shots you submit.

It's better this way because I know they have a hard time, either scoring their friends lower because they dont' want to show favoritism or if they give them a high score, because the photo merits it, they FEEL like they are showing favoritism.

So from this moment on, please do not watermark your shots for this contest.

Thanks very much
All the judges

I had wondered about that myself, I just keep forgetting to remove it before I post them here .

I am glad they are thoughtful about impartiality. :)

Please excuse my ignorance but how are you supposed to submit your photos? I could not find a special thread like the Sept 07 and Oct 07 threads. Are we supposed to submit via pm?

Judges comments on the March shots, if you are interested

There were several high scoring photos this month and the judges made comments on some of them. While the comments are anonymous (since most of the 7 judges are themselves) this is a compilation of all comments submitted (my own included) and not from any single judge.

Bottombracket's NYC Marathon: Pio, this shot really stands out to me. The unique perspective & the decision to focus on the child rather than the runners drew my eye back to it over and over. Can't say enough about it.

RX350's Spoon in the floor: Not just this photo but many of your submissions show excellent imagination (something that I see is too often lacking) and execution. Always look forward to seeing what you will submit.

equetefue's The Snake.

1. What's not to like. I love the narrow DOF and the focus on the eyes. Colors are great as is the composition.

2. Great shot. Perfect. I can find nothing to mark it down. Well done.

3. It just looks so friendly and engaging . . .

PJ60's Kitten shot
Photographically speaking, it's a bit warm in WB, the composition isn't the best, but I keep getting drawn to it over and over again. The sleeping kitty it tops for me.

>Oxygen<'s Shanghai shot
I love everything about this shot. The angle it was taken, the explosion of color, the subject matter, all the little details and the crispness of the shot.

Gymell's Monticello Swan shot
very good capture with excellent separation form the background

Rstunz's Eagle shot
another very good capture with excellent separation form the background

Bill Pham's (orchid?) shot
The beauty in the details. That's what I thought when I saw this shot. Very lovely.
