Judges Comments for April.

(remember that the judges comment on what causes them to score a shot highly or why they have not scored a shot very high....I posted all the comments so that it might help for future submissions)

IRISPATCH (grape hyacinth shot)
"Nice photo, a closer crop would improve it."

SKRIM17 (baby/rings shot)

"I loved this composition with the rings in the foreground. The symbolism was great. Only wished the rings could've been more prominent."

"I liked the idea of this shot but the pacifier was so distracting, I could not score it highly."

BILLPHAM (koi shot)

"Colorful, fun photo...bumping the ISO a touch might have allowed a slightly faster shutter speed and a touch less motion blur....still a good shot."

"Colors, sharpness, placement all said wall hanging. Well done."

"Definitely a winner."

MTNPHTGRPHR (firefighter shot)

"I know I shouldn't say this but this is my favorite photo of the year. I love everything about it."

"Nice capture, might experiment with crops to take it up one more notch."

"I couldn't find anything wrong with this photo. Good color, awesome subject matter and great set up. Really grabbed me."

ROBUK (red sunset/trees)

"Nice potential in this shot. The angle of the horizon bothered me a bit."

"There is just something with the composition of this that really confuses the eye. The color is very nice, but that doesn't make up for eye strain."

Greg_C (spider)

"This shot is very well done. I wish the lower part of the spider had not been cropped."

"Nice sharp shot, but the crop is awkward."

PRUDDOCK (building)

"Dramatic shot, but too much dynamic range, needs a GND either on camera or via editing filter at the top of the image to recover the sky and the back side of the crown."

"Like the processing on this a lot but find the composition a bit lacking...don't know where my eye is supposed to be drawn."

MTNPHTGRPHR (BW firefighter shot)

"Not entirely clear what the subject is, would love to see the focus clearly on one firefighter and the rest of them weeded out via DOF."

"good idea for a shot and good processing...the crop for me detracts from the impact"

RSTUNZ (pelican shot)

"Excellent capture. One of my favorite bird shots so far."

"Too much going on. Crazy good shot, but needs a closer crop to focus on a main subject."

"A really difficult capture. Not a wing clipped off frame. None of the whites were blown out while at the same time, none of the darks lost. No blur. Nice."

ROBUK (duckling shot)

"Very cute shot"

"Cute shot...has a ton of awwwwwwww factor, but is a touch oversharpened."

FLO (dog shot)

"If only the eyes were a little brighter... Beautiful shot."

"Great shot. Wish the eyes were brighter...maybe PP them a bit to draw the attention to the eyes."

"Very good shot. Could use a dose of noise reduction in the green to the left...but the dog is nailed!"

3TURNER (lightning shot)

"What can you say? Good shot, exposed well...great timing."

"Spectacular shot, the fence in the foreground does not really enhance the image. Cropped or cloned out would really make this a wall hanger."

IRISPATCH (moth)

"Good colors on this shot but it did not draw me in. The angle chosen for butterfly really did not cause me to focus on it and instead my eyes are distracted by the flower blur on the right."

"Very nicely done."

PJ60 (reflection drop)

"Nice shot. A bit of NR would help it a lot."

"Just doesn't work...too many flash reflections...part over-exposed, part under-exposed."

just a quick note:

Everyone, please review the rules...note that the photos are judged anonymously and the end of the year winners are hosted in a gallery to be voted on anonymously...if you have any issues with the rules and want to withdraw your photo from the end of the year contest (or the monthly contest), please let me know and it will be removed.

Permie - Thx for allowing me to substitute a submission.

Sorry I double-submitted the same shot! I'd actually forgotten that one was posted before.
