I recently ordered and should be receiving my 40D and BG-E2N by the end of this week:D.

I am wondering if the custom function is still there (coming from 20D) to set the autofocus to the * button. I don't really need it on the body with the addition of the AF-On button, but since Canon didn't include that button on the grip I would like to set it focus using the * button on the grip.

Thanks in advance,
Travis

Thanks, but I don't yet have the camera and therefore don't yet have the manual. Can you explain what the two custom functions do?

Thanks again,
Travis

The first one separates Focus Lock from the Exposure Lock in half pressed shutter button and assigns Focus Lock to AF-ON button.
The second one switches the function of * and AF-ON buttons.

Gimmie a minute, I’ll try to find direct link for downloading 40D Manual in .PDF format.

No problem. I just didn't feel like retyping my reply so I just did the lazy thing and provided a link to another post. It wasn't meant to imply that you should have done a search. :)

*I get the impression the OP is hoping to use the AF-ON button on the camera body to focus when in landscape orientation, but would like to be able to use the * button on the grip for focussing [due to lack of af-on button] when in portrait orientation?? correct?

well i'm afraid this isn't an option.... You will have to use the * button on both camera body and grip for focussing [the same as you did on your 20d].

Unfortunately if the camera body is configured to use the AF-ON button for focussing then the grip does not function correctly and neither the shutter or the * button on the grip will be able to focus......

This is why many people are a little upset with Canon about the exclussion of the af-on button on the grip.

It's a great camera though, and i'm sure you'll enjoy it very much when it arrives......

*I apologise if i read your question wrongly and this isn't what you were hoping to acheive.
