Who else is considering switching? I haven't had mine a year and I already feel like I'm behind in technology.

behind in technology?
if it works, why switch?

i'm going from an XT to a 40..and that's because my XT's sensor is about to die.
I choose the 40 because i can't stand the plastic frame of th XT/XTi, and the price difference for a 30D and 40D is like 150-200 bucks.

Switched to the "dark side" but I like these boards.

I'll switch when I need a new camera or when the current one dies.

Am very happy with my XTi. I might consider a new camera when a 5D replacement comes out, but not before then.

If you need the FPS or better ISO capabilities then get it, otherwise not much difference

I'm probably years away from my skills earning a camera better than my XTI.

If you must know...

Ive been bugging my wife since early last month
Ive very quickly gotten to the point where certain functions that i want/need just arent there on the XTi
plus the job i have now has me shooting tours with a 5D
and the features it has as well as the dial for aperture have pretty made my mind up

all though seriously..... the 5D for some reason didnt interest me up untill tonight where i just had a change of heart
when i told my wife i was thinking about it her comment was "that sounds like a great idea as its a slightly better camera then then the 40D isnt it?... it does mean though you have to wait longer till you can get it!"

"bugga that" was my response. Ill get the 40D soon and buy a 5D next year hoping that they will drop to under or close to $2000 when the 5dm2 (speculation and wishful thinking)

I was really considering selling off a lot of stuff to fund a 40D but when I really stopped to think about it, I realized I really can't justify the purchase just for the sake of having the newest camera. So I think I'll probably go from my XTi to a 40D when the 40D body drops down to $1000.00.

The XTi gives IQ equal to the 30D, it's got a larger LCD, it's got the same focusing unit as the 30D, anti-dust, 2 more megapixels (for what it's worth), and is just plain newer than the 30D.

Ok, no wheel on the back. So what? If you're used to the XTi then like me you can probably blaze through the settings and a wheel would be awkward for a while. Before anyone asks, I have a 10D as well so yes, I have some experience with the wheel. The 30D is bigger. I understand some people make that one of their priorities but honestly with the grip, the XTi is plenty large enough for me. I read a lot of posts where people turn their noses up at the very idea of owning a Rebel... the horror of it all! I think it's rather silly but what do I know?

I'd say if it's that big a thing for you to have the latest and greatest then go for it and enjoy. For me, I'll wait until the 40D price drops and keep using my XTi and working to improve my photography because I know for a fact the XTi with good glass can produce jaw-dropping images much like the mid-range cameras can.

I was pretty determined, but then I thought.... how am I going to get a better picture if I don't have good glass? I am now considering a few different choices, all of which I could and would use alot. 100mm 2.8 macro, 400mm 5.6. I could still get the 40D but the lure of better glass is beating me out right now.

Dude if you get the 400mm f/5.6L you will love it. Mines is virtually glued to my XTi.

Obviously, getting the lenses you need is a higher priority, especially if you have a decent camera body that works.

Switching from an XTi to a 40D is a bit hard today, especially since the XTi is bound to be a new camera.

I am planning the switch to the 40D from the 350D, as:
My 350D is celebrating it's 30.000 click anytime this month.
I really needed the next bigger size in camera body. The 350D with grip marginally fits my hands.
I need faster AF for BIF and some sports activities.
I would really benefit from 6.5fps against 3fps
I would really benefit from 1 extra stop by means of ISO boost, especially when using telephoto with TC.

If my 350D breaks, I will obviously place an order for the 40D.

In any case, my 350D still works and am still waiting for the startup hush with the 40D to settle before I get mine. In the meanwhile, I might first get a 100-400 to cover the gap that selling the 80-400 has created.

I just switched and have my xti for sale in the sale forum. I guess I need to put a photo on there so people will look and buy it. :)

I wanted the 40d for faster fps among other things. It is a nicer camera.

Base the decision based on your needs. Not everyone will need a 40D. I wanted the FPS and the better ISO performance of hte 40D. Further, I used to own a 20D and missed the ergonomics of the xxD line.

But that is just me, not everyone should upgrade.

I sold my XTi exactly one year after I got it which was two weeks ago in order to get the 40D. It was definitely worth it, 40D offers so much more and it took me a few hours to really learn it, it's very different and much much more advanced
