I have used a 17-70 and a 24-60 2.8 from sigma, and the 24-60 won hands down in sharpness across the frame!

I have both of these lenses and I'd agree -- the 24-60 is definitely sharper. Crazy sharp. And its faster at the tele end. But I still like my 17-70 for walking around -- 24mm isn't always wide enough and the 17-70 can focus a lot closer which is essential for the kind of photography I like to do.

I have both Sigma 17-70mm and 24-70mm. I found out that they're completely different lenses after I spent more time with them.

17-70mm lens is more of kit lens replacement. Good daytime, walkaround lens. Pretty sharp and light.

24-70mm f/2.8 is the lens I use for special purpose such as wedding, or shooting at darker places. It is sharper than 17-70mm, but quite a bit heavier.

Initially when I bought both of them, I was planning to sell one of them. Now I'm stuck with both. :o

As said before.

I also would go for the 24-70 EX DG 2.8. For weddings the available ligth shots are a big issue! You dont want to spoil the environment with the flash... SO a 2.8 lens is a must!
Beside the light the background blur of the 24-70 is far better than the 17-70!

2.8 at 70mm gives a neat Back Ground Blur... a very important feature for weddings!

Canon EOS 40D Gripped / 20D Gripped, EF 70-200 2.8L, [COLOR=black]EF 100-400 IS USM L, EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS USM, EF-S 10-22 USM, Sigma 105mm 2.8 EX Macro, Kenko 2XTC DG Kenko 1.4TC DG, Kenko Extension Tubes DG 12-20, Canon Speedlite 580EX, Manfrotto Tripod!
