What i have been using instead of the usual paper tissue is a thin foam sheeting, it came as wrapping for my new monitor, i have two layers placed over an adapted plastic cup held down by rubber bands.

It lets more light through than paper tissue, i can happily use the lowest flash setting available.

I cant praise this material highly enough and i recommend you give it a try :) ...
