Lightroom: Why upon import is it tweaking my color?

Hi all,

I'm a relatively new user to LR (and love it!), but one thing I've noticed is that the images look (from a color standpoint) pretty good immediately upon import, and then LR makes some adjustments that make them look pretty greenish. :p

I've turned off the option that says 'do color correction upon import' and it's still doing the same thing. Is there another setting someplace else that is applying some kind of "import color correction template" that I don't know about??

Thanks in advance,
Greg

Are they raw files or jpegs?

And if you go into Develop mode, are all the sliders on their Adobe default values (i.e. could you have changed the defaults by accident?)

Hi Victoria,

Sorry about that: I'm shooting in RAW, so this is in relation to previews of the RAW images.

I'll check on the Adobe defaults....don't think I've done anything with them, but that's certainly possible. I assume there's something in the "Preferences" area that would allow me to re-set them?

It is likely that you are seeing the preview based on the embedded JPEG before LR renders the RAW image. The embedded JPEG has been processed using the in-camera parameters so it will look different from the RAW.

Ah, interesting...so essentially what I'm ultimately seeing in LR is the "unvarnished" RAW image, sans any correction?

Didn't realize that the initial camera JPEG preview would apply any enhancements to it, but I could see how that might be the case...

Kind of.... well, if you saw an untouched raw file, it would be a heap of 1's and 0's, and would translate into a dodgy flat image.

Every raw converter puts its own starting point on the raw file, and you tweak it from there.

When you're originally seeing the preview, you are seeing the embedded jpeg preview, which is the file with processing applied in camera. Then it reads the raw file, and applies the default settings to it.

Don't forget you can create your own preset and have LR apply it automatically at import...

Hi Victoria,

Thanks for the clarification...very helpful!

That sounds like it might be helpful, since I seem to be making similar sets of adjustments every time, for example, based on using my flash indoors, etc.

If you can point me in the right direction in terms of where I can set that up, I should be able to figure it out from there.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Go to Develop, make the settings you want, save as new preset in LH pane then when you import select that preset from the drop down menu
