Well, I guess the only people who could really answer this for me would be those who had the 20D and now have the 40D. I primarily shoot birds with the 400L f/5.6

So, I am curious as to whether or not the 40D will give me a significant bump up in IQ. Just the spot metering alone is very tempting as it would be a big help. That being said though if the IQ is not significantly better than I will continue to hoard my pennies till I can afford the MkIII.

Any advice from those with hands on experience would be greatly appreciated.

I upgraded from the 20D to the 40D. I am not a pixle peeper so I would say that I don't see a big difference in image quality yet. I have not had a chance to use it in a variety of settings such as low light yet.

It does seem to me that the 40D does a better job of metering in the same modes as the 20D. I don't seem to get as many blinkies outdoors as I did before. Not sure if that makes sense or not but it is just my impression.

I didn't expect the jump from 8 to 10 mp to be that much of a difference but you really can crop more.

The big thrill for me is the large LCD and menu. I also like being able to change focus points with just one push of a button instead of 2. I shoot mainly people and it was always awkward for for me to change focus points on the 20d when going from landscape to portrait mode trying to keep the focus point on the face instead of the middle of the body. I always felt that all the focus points on the 20D were crap except for the center so I had to always focus and recompose.

Hope that helps.

Is that with highlight tone priority turned on?

I don't understand. You can choose any focus point with one jog of the joystiq.

I own both - the IQs are quite similiar. I love the customization available on the 40D, the quieter and quicker shutter, the large screen, the editable picture styles, the highlight preservation, the iso in the viewfinder, the quicker and surer autofocus, the bigger grip.

Worth it to me.

Nono.. I think he means you can do that with the 20D. Or I can, at least!

Yes, that's what I meant. You can use the joystiq to select the focus point with one push on the 20D and the 40D. Yet queenbee said it took two on the 20D.

Juan,

I've just asked a very similar question in another thread so these links are greatly appreciated.

Best regards

I found how to change it from 2 pushes to 1 push on the 40D. I never found that function on the 20D. Maybe the larger LCD and easier menu helped me to find it. I had to push 2 buttons on the 20D. I never saw an option to change it to one.
