40D issues shooting AWB in Shade

I'm having an issue with my 40D shooting with Auto WB in the shade. All my pictures are on the blue side. If I manually set the WB to shade the pictures come out perfectly. It's almost like camera is over compensating in the shade in AWB.
Has anyone else seen this?

Yes, I find it's pretty common for AWB to be off by quite a bit with my 20D and with several other digital cameras that I have used.

AWB doesn't always do the job and sometimes you just have to pick the appropriate WB for the lighting situation OR shoot RAW and adjust WB in post processing, which gets you the most for your image.

I find that as well but only on my 40D.
when i first got my 40D i was shocked at how different shots that i had taken before now looked different compared to my 30D. Partly due to the LCD being much better on the 40D and i guess maybe the 30D was off more than i thought.
on my PC im quite happy with the AWB and have now got used to it.

Shoot RAW and in-camera WB almost becomes a non-issue. ;)

AWB does take a while to react to a change in lighting. Especially if there is some mixed lighting. Try showing your camera only shade for a bit before shooting. Depending on the model of body, anywhere from a few seconds to 1/2 min. might do it.

personally im happy with AWB. Ive always used it and as i shoot RAW its not a problem for me to adjust it afterwards. In fact thats one of the reasons i like shooting RAW.

Was this intended to be a joke? If so, a smiley might have been appropriate.

AWB is computed from the shot photo. It does not take actual lighting into account. Current Canon DSLRs can't tell the color of anything except via the main sensor, so they wouldn't have a clue about the color temperature unless you have Live View activated.

(The original 1D and 1Ds models did have a separate ambient-lighting color sensor, and the color measured by that sensor was considered while processing AWB.)
