Yesterday morning I hit my favorite area on the way to work, Cleveland's industrial flats. I parked the car and just started walking with the 70-200 looking for interesting shadows and shapes.

From behind I heard the chugging and wheezing of an old tanker. This was the water truck. So much dust is generated from the transport semis and activity at Ontario Stone that this old guy in his truck has the duty of slowly circling the the neighborhood and spraying down the streets.

This is the B/W version - C&C sought and welcomed ;). - Stu

Stuart, I love it. I almost shot that exact location this morning (the machine shop to the right). I was going to say that a 2-3 stop gnd might have worked on the sky but as I look at it, I think I like it as is. Love the composition and you can actually see the dirt where the truck hasn't been yet.

BTW, I was half choking down there this morning as I shot a few on the north end. You're right about those trucks!!!

Hi Scott - thank you for the kind words. That guy must go chugging in 1st gear about 2mph for most of the morning.

I was actually using a CPL filter on the end of the zoom, but was not at an optimum angle to the sun to get any sky darkening effect. I will typically compose with the hood off, turn the CPL for best effect, and then remount that monster hood. You are right about the dust. I'd love to get over into Ontario Stone for some different viewpoints but they've got No Trespassing signs and fences all over the place.

Since you enjoy shooting Cleveland also, there's a photography show that opens next Thursday 9/27 at the Levin College of Urban Affairs on the CSU campus, at 17th & Euclid. They will be hanging 40 Cleveland works from 26 different photographers. Here's the link:

There is a .pdf on the site you can open which shows the contributing photographers. My wife and I are planning to attend. Maybe we'll see you there ;).

Super - it's in the ground floor of the building a little bit towards the back. There's parking right across the street and in an ajacent garage.
I'm looking forward to it as I really don't know many Cleveland fotogs, and I look at this as a good opportunity to meet some of the exhibitors.

My wife is often my biggest and best critic - often this is a GOOD thing; other times, wellllll...... we have these little discussions about my work and how much I spend on ink cartridges. Anyway, she thought the Water Truck was ok, but preferred the color original. Her reasoning was the way the sunlight illuminates patches on the warehouse buildings. She felt this was not as evident in the B/W version.

know what? I think she's right. the shot is "undersaturated" enough already because of the bright sky and dirty road, the little bit of color is subtle enough to add, not take away from this shot. face it Stuart, if if she was wrong, she's still right. right? :D

Gentlemen, I agree - the B/W is a pleasant interpretation, but the color has a bit more dimension and mood to it. And Scott, you are SO right about the wives being right.

What was that old joke: "If a man says something deep in the forest, and his wife isn't around to hear him, is he still wrong?"
