On the Africa expedition we had 2 1D MK III. Mine and Jake's.
I'll let Jake give a status on his but here what I experienced.
On day 1 I had a panick attack when the MKIII suddenly would not focus at all with ANY lens. It was not set on manual focus by mistake. AF simply did not respond at all. I had to remove battery and reset all settings for it to start focusing again. My MKIII has the latest firmware installed (by Canon ServiceCenter in CPH) and it was also adjusted for backfocus before leaving. Fortunately this was a one time experience and the camera performed perfectly 99% of the time.
The mathmeticians should by now know that I did experience other problems... Before I left I did not know if my MKIII was affected by the issue described by Jake, blonde and others. But on the trip I definately saw this issue too. I had focus on a small bird on a busy background and focus would suddenly switch to the background even though the center focuspoint was dead on the bird. I used centerpoint with expansion on 99% of the time. I think on one occation I used ring-of-fire focus.
As for dust... In Africa there is a lot of dust and it gets everywhere. And I would have expected more dust on the sensor than is the case. I certainly see some dust on a f22 exposure but it is insignificant and I won't bother doing anything about it. I have so far not seen the dust on any of the photos I have processed so far. So in my opinion the sensor cleaning is doing what it is supposed to do. Considering I had the socalled dustpump (100-400 IS L) on my MKIII 99% of the time (when the body was out of the bag) I think it did a good job.
