Im going to be converting my xt to infrared thru lifepixel hopefull within in the next few weeks. I have some questions regarding it though.

1. which IR do most recommend/use, standard,enhanced, deep/b&w filter?
2. Would you attempt the conversion yourself and save $305 + shipping/insurance?

$95 is alot easier for me to spend then $400+ especially after my last thread about the purchase of the 40d. I am confident i could do it myself by taking my sweet ass time and reading the instructions that will hopefully come with it, and the link i have either on the laptop or at home that show the step by step disassembly of the camera.

so what do you guys think?

Go for it! If you have a problem it probably won't cost you any more to get it fixed than to have the conversion done in the first place.

I converted my own Nikon D70 with the help of LifePixels instructions. It was easy.

I just had my XT converted by lifepixel and got it back yesterday. I love it! I took some test shots and boy am I excited to take it out for a real workout. I was going to do the conversion myself too, but I decided that I didn't have the time to do it and I don't have a clean enough place for it either. I chose the standard IR filter, but I just saw some pictures with one of the other ones and I think I like the other one better. Here is a link to a thread where someone was selling their converted camera and had some examples shots: https://photography-on-the.net …384066&highlight=infrared

Here are some test shots that I took with my newly converted XT:

Wow! I didn't realize that 3/4 the cost of that conversion is labor. At that price, it would surely be worth taking a shot at.

IR is awesome, and I would definitely suggest the DIY if you have the space to spread out and take your time.

It cost me $360 to get mine done, including shipping. Just FYI.

A little post processing will yield the same results as the photos in the IR 10D for sale thread ;)

Oh really? I guess I need to take some photoshop classes. It would also probably help to have a version of photoshop that is newer than 5. Thanks for the tip!

I sure wouldn't say that you can get the 'same' results. You may be able to cheat a little and approximate the look of an IR shot, but there's just something special about a true near-IR photo.

Can you only shoot infrared if you have your camera converted? Where do you get the kit?

You're misreading my post. I'm talking about Post Processing a true IR photo. I was saying that he could post process his IR shot to get the same look as the IR photos in the other thread. Maybe my post wasn't specific enough ;)

And yes, you are correct. You can simulate an IR-effect in Photoshop, but it will never be as good as straight off an IR camera.
