I have been learning my new 5D after coming over from Nikon and like it very much so far. Most of the settings are similar to my D2H so it hasn't been that difficult. I am curious about tone, sharpening, etc. I have not been able to find in the menu where these are adjusted; aside from the Picture Styles feature. Since I am shooting RAW do I need to worry about this? I normally set in camera sharpening to "0" and sharpen in Photoshop CS. But since I cannot find the sharpening control in the camera's menu I have no idea what sharpening is set at.

Picture Styles is for jpeg only, correct?

I guess it also applies to RAW images.

I find Nuetral set to 5 2 2 0 best for me.:)
Landscape 7 1 1 0
Portrai 3 1 1 0

A bit wrong according to my understanding. The sharpening, toning, etc. ONLY APPLY TO JPEGs. RAW is RAW and its what the camera sees. You don't get to play with it until it hits post production in PhotoShop.

As far as a seperate sharpening control is concerned. If there is one, I have not seen it.

Great camera and welcome to our side from the Nikon side.

Great! So I guess I don't need to worry about in camera sharpening. I normally shoot in RAW and do all of my processing in Photoshop CS. With the D2H there are tone and sharpening settings but was never sure if they never do anything to the RAW files.

Great camera and welcome to our side from the Nikon side.

Thanks! I still own my Nikon gear and have been debating selling it to KEH to fund a 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM.

I only shoot in RAW (well RAW and Small JPEG so I can see them easier on the PC). After I shot the 5D for a couple of times, I discovered RAW was the way to go.

I have a 70-200 F2.8L IS, AWESOME LENS. I don't actually use it much (shoot with the 100-400 more on airplanes in flight), but it is sharp, clear, a real joy to use (I'm starting to sound like the other people on this forum). ONLY problem with the F2.8 is that it is HEAVY. I just looked up the specs, but the F4 IS weighs about 1/2 of the F2.8. So if you shoot indoors, f2.8 is it, outdoors the F4 is fine. I have had a lot of people tell me they like the F4, same comments I'm making about the F2.8.

Sell the Nikon stuff and get more L lenses.

Have a nice day

I am a landscape photographer (i.e. Galen Rowell, Art Wolfe, John Shaw). So I always shoot outdoors in available light utilizing small apertures (f/5.6-f/32). When you have to hike miles into the backcountry smaller lighter gear is a plus; hence the 5D. I'm not even sure if I NEED the IS version as I always shoot from a CF Gitzo. I think that the 5D may be the perfect camera for my style of shooting; I've always used the pro level Nikons in the past but they are too heavy.

If you usually use a tripod, and don't need low-light performance, save yourself the $$$ and the Lbs and get the 70-200 F4 non-IS. It's a beautiful lens to use. IQ is equal to the more expensive 70-200s at F5.6 and above. The lens tripod mount is nice, but not essential.
