Are you in Green Square Mode? It is defaulted to the AF-ON button in Green Square Mode and can't be changed. You can only change it in Tv, M, Av, P, and C123.

C.Fn III-2? That's not the custom function you need to set if you want to change the action of the AF-ON button. You have to set C.Fn-IV-1 and/or C.Fn-IV-2.

The 40D has an AF-ON button just to the left of the "*" button. It allows you to use it for focusing just like you can on the previous models by setting C.Fn-4 to 2 or 3 and using the "*" button for focusing. The C.Fn-IV-1 on the 40D is equivalent to C.Fn-4 on the 30D and earlier models.

Since some people prefer the "*" button over the AF-ON button, C.Fn-IV-2 allows you to switch the functions of the AF-ON and the "*" buttons so that one can use the "*" button for focusing instead of the AF-ON button.

Which is darn handy when you shoot with the grip installed in portrait mode.

Leo - Refer to page 158 of the user manual. Custom function III - 2 "Lens AF stop button function". You can change the AF-ON button from the default action to various other actions such as switching from one shot to AI servo and back, changing from auto select of focus points to manual select, etc. There are 6 different functions for the button (0-5). As stated previously, my button will not change functions no matter what CF mode I select.

SPR - Definitely not in full auto mode, thanks.

Page 158 also says, "The AF Stop button is provided only on super telephoto IS lenses"

Do you have one of these "super telephoto IS lenses" with an AF Stop button?

As Mrkgoo said, the AF Stop button is the button that's on the super telephoto lenses like the 300 f/2.8 and higher. That function is not referring to the AF-ON button that's on the camera.
