went to the races last weekend, was a beautiful california summer day, and i was just looking at some of the exif data from the pics, and some of them were shot in auto, and the iso was like 320, why would this be?

because the camera is using everything to try and determine how to get the best exposure using your ISO,f stop and shutter speed.

The closest thing i use to auto is AV mode.
and i use that when i'm shooting drift events.

Switched to the "dark side" but I like these boards.
Digital: Nikon D200
Lenses: Nikkor 50 1.8D, Nikkor-P 55 macro 3.5, Nikkor 35 1.8G Nikkor 85 1.8.

Yup, I shot in Auto in bright day light with a 28mm f1.8 prime and it would pick like 1/1000 shutter speed and similar ISO for no real reason when I was shooting simple snap shot where nothing was moving.

You know what they say about computers, "garbage in, garbage out."
