Howdy everyone,

I have been looking for a Canon S5 IS as a gift for a family member and came across this auction on Ebay. This is a NEW camera and the seller claims the new Canon S5 IS and other NEW Canon P&S cameras no longer come with a warranty, it's an option you have to purchase?

I have never heard of this, has anyone here?

Thanks.

The item number if you want to check it out is: 330168212334

As far as I understand all Canon cameras come with at least one year of warranty from the date of purchase.
I do not know too much about ebay, but at home we have bought from Amazon.com several things including Canon cameras without any problem.

There was a ridiculous difference in price from ebay to Amazon.com a few hours ago, but I see right now the ebay price is $ 200.00 plus at least $25.00 for shipping, and there are still 17 hours to go, so I guess the price at ebay will be probably higher than the one on Amazon.com:

Price:$351.99 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping. Details (external link)

I hope somebody with experience buying from ebay will help.

I prefer the stable offers from Amazon.com and I am almost sure their S5 IS comes with the original Canon warranty.

Well, I did email the seller and ask how they can sell a NEW Canon camera without a factory warranty and as of yet have not heard anything back. We shall see?

Almost certainly no warranty means that the camera is a 'grey import' - that is, it's been sourced abroad and imported, rather than sourced via Canon's official in-country distribution chain.

It may also have other connotations (at the very worst, the camera "fell off the back of a lorry").

In this case, the seller is pretty firm that the camera isn't grey import, so your guess is as good as mine. Maybe it's me, but I would steer well clear, on the basis that if something concerns you about the item, there'll be another one along shortly.

I think it's possible to buy the US version in Japan, but, it won't be warrantied unless you bring it back to Japan. I think!

USA warranties are offered by Canon USA on only the products they have imported and sold in North America. Again, I think.

If the guy cannot offer a warranty, it most likely means he is not an authorized Canon dealer and there is no telling how he got his hands on this camera. He is not the first Ebay vendor to stretch the truth a tiny bit.

A two minute trip over to Canon's website or a quick call to customer support or any retailer will certainly verify that their cameras do indeed come with a warranty when acquired legitimately. Why rely on a bunch of dummies like us?

I don't wish to be referred to as a dummy!

Thank you!
