For about a year now I have been able to take photos off of the rebel XT that I use with school with my home computer. Never had a problem until tonight. First the computer said that I needed the cameras software, which I have never needed before. So I downloaded a driver from the Canon site and still nothing is being recognized by my computer. Any help?

Had a similar problem with my 400D/XTi when I was experimenting with the EOS Utility application. I'm running Windows XP and when I connected the camera to a USB 2 port with the supplied cable, Windows began the Found New Hardware Wizard. I allowed Windows to search for suitable drivers and voila! The camera is now quickly recognized when I connect it by USB cable.

Try rebooting your PC, connect the USB cable, then turn the camera on. Let Windows find the drivers.

The only problem with that is the first time the window came up I clicked the recommended option and didn't notice right away that at the bottom the option to 'not ask me this again' was already clicked. So how do I get that window to prompt again when I turn the camera on?

go into EOS Utility when the camera is connected, and then change preferences. it's either in the start menu or whereever you installed it

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.
