Great shots. Really like #1. How do you keep the background from going dark on your flash shots?

Thanks :)

Think the lack of dark background is a combination of things. Fairly open apertures, flash mounted so the head is near the end of the lens, but mainly because I try to make sure there is some background within about 2-6" of the subject to light up.

Nice eye detail on the hopper! Also, well done on not getting flash highlights on the first ladybird!

Another lovely series of images Brian, with #2 my favourite. Very nice hopper shot, I guess it must pay to have the MPE-65 ;) I'm also surprised (only partly though) at the lack of reflections on the ladybird, although your normal lighting is generally excellent anyways.

Great shots as ever Brian.

I just spent 10 minutes looking for a refraction in those drops... :D

Thanks for the comments Al, Dave and Bernie :)
Sorry Bernie- the angle was wrong to get refractions- that would have been good :)

Dave I have trouble working out why sometimes you bad reflections on these and other times hardly any at all. Only thing I did was reduce the FEC on the flash by a full stop to allow for the dark background.

Very nice shots Brian. On a side note I've been studying your macro tutorials.
Thanks a lot for them. I think I'm getting a tad better.:)

Nice shots, up to your usual standard, LordV. I wouldn't mind reading the tutorials to which Peepaw refers - can you point me in the general direction please?

I noticed you were (are!) a Microbiologist - I went to school in Portsmouth with a friend who - coincidentally followed this path after school/Uni and also resided in Worthing. I used to drive him home most weekends whenever he came down from a visit!

Great work - very inspiring.

Actually, it was Durrington - but close enough!
