New guy needs an explanation?

Can someone please explain to me what the term "crop" means? I keep seeing references to it. Which models are crops?

Rebel, Rebel XTi, (300D, 400D). 1.6 crop means 1.6 "zoom". 10mm = 16mm on a 1.6 crop, so 10mm in a 1.6 crop equals 16mm in a Ful Frame (no crop) body

300D/350D/400D and the 10D/20D/30D/40D etc. lines have 1.6x cropped sensors (when compared to full-frame you only "see" and record the middle bit of the frame, the edges are ignored.

1d/1dII/1dIIN/1d3 is a 1.3x crop.

5D/1ds/1dsII/1dsIII are full-frame - i.e. the digital sensor is the same size as a film negative.

in this case, 1:c works well. the term "crop body" is really a misnomer started by the fact that the sensor size is smaller than a 35mm piece of film, and is therefore a cropped sensor (cropped out 35mm). in a way, we tend to use crop as a ratio of the sensor size to a 35mm one. the 5d and 1ds lines are full frame (35mm, no "crop"), 1d are APS-H (aka 1.3 crop), and the rest of the eos line are APS-C (aka 1.6 crop)

D30, D60, 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 300D, 350D, 400D = 1.6x crop (APS-C)
1D, 1D Mark II, 1D Mark II N, 1D Mark III = 1.3x crop (APS-H)
1Ds, 1Ds Mark II, 1Ds Mark III, 5D = 35mm equivalent (Full Frame)

Not quite . It's not a "zoom" factor, it's a crop. a 24mm lens on a full frame camera is still a 24mm lens on a crop camera. For the example you gave a 10mm lens on a 1.6 crop camera has the same "field of view" as a 16mm lens on full frame.

You are absolutely correct Bob. This has been beat to death a few times. When possible we should let the new guys think that the 1.6 cameras give them more "zoom" and they can sort out the gory details later.
