What a blast these races are, very entertaining! This was my first time shooting planes in flight, so go easy on me ;)

Glad to see some shots from this event. Wish I could have been there.

Thank you for sharing.

the backgrounds are too sharp and you lose the plane in them .

a wider aperture would have helped to separate the backgrounds... and as you have stripped the exif data i cant see what the settings were..

I went too. Photos will be up later sometime. But it was a blast. I will be going again for sure if they do it again there next year. Very fun. I guess there is some flight week next month when the Navy does a bunch of stuff in San Diego too so that should be fun to check out also.

I have a 70-200 F4L and it was good but man would a 300 or 400 have been nice to have there.

Next Saturday is what is normally the kick-off event for Fleet Week--The Sea and Air Parade. The Navy trots out all their cool toys and puts on a big show for the public.

I've got a couple of galleries up from the last two years.

I've been reading and learning a lot here at POTN, but never posted anything. Thanks for all the helpful information everbody :-)

I took some shots at the Red Bull Air Races this weekend, and wanted to know if its cool if I just share a couple in this thread?
Thanks again for the tips y'all. Brian.

I think you did well considering the challenges of a first time and the distances involved!

As for what Chris/nzshrimper suggests, I don't think it would be possible to shoot wide open, and have the background fade out. Too much distance of the aircraft, in relation to the background (both very far away) - Would have to go for some motion blur, less shutter speed - but at that distance again it's tough -
So good photos, plenty of colour and sharp!

Thanks guys!
And you're right Wazza, the distance and the sheer speed involved was more of a challenge that I expected. Sure was A LOT of fun to see these guys tearing around the bay.

And yes, please everyone share your photos here, I know a lot of POTN-SD people were planning on going. Post em up!

I think those turned out really good. I've got a bunch of pictures from there too, just got to get around to posting them.

Nice photos guys! Yes, it was tricky getting good shots wasn't it. I actually went both days so was able to see how they turned out on Friday and was able to make a couple of adjustments for Saturdays race. I slowed down the shutter and worked more on the composition on Saturday. Shot hundreds of photos and ended up with a few I like. lol.

Now lets see if I can figure out how to post these things...

Yes, it was tough day for shooting. Especially since I don't know what I was doing. I tried to get prop blur as best I could.

Here are a few pics.
