Hi all, I'm use too nikon's camera layouts, but am highly considering the 40d + 70-200mm IS combo. On Nikons when you are selecting focus points, the focus point you select is always displayed. And also you don't have to press a button before changing your focus point.

One issue that i am dealing with is that it is hard to select focus points and when you select a point it doesn't display it until you halfway press the shutter. Also i have to press the one button on the top right to make it able for me to start using the points.

My question is, is there any way to make it so i don't have to press that button to start selecting points and also is there a way for the point selected to always be displayed?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Set C.Fn III-3 to 1 or 2 so you can use the multi-controller or quick control dial, respectively, to select the desired AF point without having to press the AF point selection button (page 159 in the manual).

I don't think there is a way to display your selected AF point permanently.

EDIT: Sorry, I just re-read your post and realized you are considering the 40D, which probably means you don't have one yet. What I mentioned above applies only to the 40D (as far as I know).

I haven't heard of this being different from the 30D, and on that, the answers would be yes, and no.

Yes, there is a custom setting that enables the focus points to be selected by the multi-way "joystick" without first pressing the AF button; no, the points only light up on initial selection, or when they are are active and over an in-focus point.
