Doesn't bother me at all. It takes about 10 seconds to swap batteries.

Canon 1DMKIII, 7D w/WFT-E5A, 40D modded with Baader filter, Celestron CPC1100, Astro-Tech AT8RC on a Celestron CGEM, some fast lenses, and some tripods...

Can't believe it just came out and they didn't incorporate this!!! (Wireless-N is much faster and better, and is backwards compatible with G, etc.)

Because Wireless N is not an established, finalized network standard yet.

No, not me!
As much as I would like to put a really nice grip on my 40D, I cannot justify that kind of money for something that I really do not need..

I hope that some smart manufacturer from Hong Kong or Chine comes up with a decent version of BG-2N, with AF-ON button and proper sealing – for a reasonable price, let’s say, $200.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Network standard? It has been available now for months...finalized. Available hardware routers and wireless cards from linksys, and built in wireless cards on hp laptops for months now.

I'm not talking about Pre-N. I'm talking about N.

I have an N network (not pre-N), and the signal, stability, and throughput are incredible compared to my 'older' G.

No, it is NOT a standard. It is still draft 2.0. The 802.11 amendment is not expected to be completed until March 2009.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11#802.11n (external link) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11n (external link) (they are different URLs).

While one can certainly purchase existing products that use 802.11n Draft 2.0, there is absolutely no guarantee they will be compatible with future network products conforming to the finalized 802.11n standard.

And in fact, "wireless N" products have been available for years, not months, and manufacturers make no warranty nor claims that interoperability is guaranteed amongst other brands of wireless N hardware, nor future revisions thereof.

Let me repeat, so that I am absolutely 35mm f/1.4L clear on the matter: Wireless N is still in DRAFT 2.0. This means it is not a finalized standard, and will not be until March of 2009.

I just don't understand the $800 price point. 802.1g cards for a laptop cost $40. Next, someone who is willing to drop $800 on a grip is probably a pro shooter... but the 40d is not a professional camera. If this grip had a list for $499 and a stree price of $350 I would be more inclined to buy it.

Cheers!
Rian

I believe that this is the cheapest WI-FI attachment that Canon has put out yet. Correct me if i'm wrong but WFT-E1 and WFT-E2 were/are at the $1000.00 mark. I do not see the price coming down anytime soon as it is intended for working photographers whos workflow could be improved by this feature and not the average Joe wanting cool accessories.

10 seconds...if you have brackets and quick release plates and all that on the camera???

Brackets and quick release plates all attach to the bottom of the grip so it would take just as long to remove the grip with or with out brackets and plates.

Any manual focusing has to be done by the photographer by actually turning the focus ring on the lens. If the wireless remote shooting works like the tethered shooting than it should focus in auto focus mode. You should also be able to control your aperture, shutter speed, ISO as well as triggering from the computer.

Head over to cnet and read the reviews of the draft N routers. They all have received very bad marks. Looks like N is not ready for prime time, draft or not.

As I stated in my post on the first page of this discussion, there is a reason it is called DRAFT-N:

umbra wrote in post #3991766 (external link)
Also about the N protocol not being used. Not many laptops even come with cards that use one of the flavors of N, either Pre-N, MIMO, or Draft-N. This protocol won't be published till 2009. Im not making excuses for this as Im one of those that would really like this as I have Draft-N wireless in my home. Remember...we're talking about Canon here :D. I'm glad that they at least put G in this grip.

Well, if you look at the current price of the Canon wireless data transmitter (approx. $300), then you understand they can charge $800 for a new grip, with wifi.

would love one, but as a hobby photographer, really can't justify the price. it's probably not going to make my pics better and i probably don't need one. just trying to console myself here...
