captain. i think it depends on what you want to use it for. from what i have gathered its a great wedding camera, portrait, and landscape, and has great abilities with low light.

so if dust, and not being able to use ef-s lenses are the biggest of your problems, then then i would stick with a 40d. if your shooting sports i would really have to agree with everyone when they say the 1D series is the way to go.

with the rumors of the 5d mark 2 coming in late fall to early winter ( with the noticeable price drops of the 5d already) why not just save up for that? it is rumored to have the cleaning sensor, weather sealed, and some other info can be found here.

ill wait another month or two before i get really serious about buying one in december just to see what happens.

but everything i have heard... just only confirms in my mind that this will be in my bag soon. i have not heard enough bad things about this camera to make me go with something else.

I liked it so much I bought 2. Its a great camera and is very good in low light. The 40D also looks to be a real nice camera at a great price.
For sports if you're doing allot or working allot outdoors in sometimes questionable conditions the 1D series is a no brainer.

I just sold mine so have no stake in promoting it. I can truly say it is a beautiful tool for the photographer. For all the reasons mentioned it easily out performs the 20/30D cameras. It is slightly specialised but most camera bodies are. I remember one guy saying it was no use for wildlife. I took shots on my recent Africa trip what blows such dumb opinions out of the water. I have seen little vigneting - and the few times I did I stopped down and no problem. The width in the VF is hard to not want. 110% recommendation.

I don't have too much dust on my sensor, I blow it out mostly before a major shoot. But I do have dust in my viewfinder, which can't come out and that bothers me. Other than that, I love it. I tried it for soccer yesterday instead of my 20D, put the 1.4 extender on it with the 70-200 2.8 IS and it worked great. The large viewfinder is a definitely plus.

yeah, I could never get it out of the viewfinder or the focus screen...which didn't affect my shots but drove me to distraction (but wouldn't keep me from purchasing it). Blowing it out really did work pretty well for my sensor too.

I tried everything I could to get the 2 little hairs out of the viewfinder, but it won't come out. As long as the little dust bunnies go away from the shots, I have no complaints. I would rather take the 2 little spots on a huge viewfinder than have a tiny one.

I had the same problem: Viewfinder/eyepiece crud. I dropped it off at Irvine one day for sensor cleaning and they took care of that problem too, for free in about 1.5 hrs. If/when you drive to NY just take a side trip to NJ.:)

I was actually thinking about going to NJ to do that, but it's not that big a deal. I ignore it.

I own the 400D and use a 5D for work
Two things that annouy me are, menu selction compared with the 400D(i know you cant really compare) but comparing that too the bosses 1D, the 1D controls are cumbersome and less natural.

Other then that the buttons feel really squishy... i like firm, clicky buttons though.

But alas you just cant get that DOF on anything else. The saturation IQ and wieght are just way too much to outway the bad points of this camera.
I just wish i could walk out the door with works camera :(

That's the truth. The quality of the 5D is well worth the pricetag and then some. I get that WOW effect all the time, but now I'm thinking the 40D and 5D combo for events would be perfect.

That's what I'm thinking too basically. Sell the 10D, keep the 20D for any "action" shots and use the 5D for my main work.

I wish I was thinking that conservatively:D I am toying with the idea of buying the 1DsMk III when it comes out in Nov.........;)

Captain, I bought a 350D about 16 months (+/-) ago and upgraded to the 5D about 5 months ago. I have absolutely no regret - the difference in IQ is, IMHO, fantastic. I went for the full frame, partly because I don't have to figure out the 1.6 factor into the focal length of the lens. If you can afford it and don't need the high fps for sports then I say go for it, you will not regret it. I do mostly nature and landscapes so the lower fps than others is not a factor.

Cheers,

WesternGuy

It's not good for action but the portrait/people -type photos are crystal clear. I haven't had any trouble with dust on my sensor. I have never regretted buying this camera.

i've seen some great action shots with the 10d which also shoots 3 fps and doesn't AF nearly as well as the 5d or do anything else as well.

but yeah my only gripe is the 3 fps which makes the camera sluggish even if you don't shoot in bursts.
