Ring shots - when do you take them

I have seen many beautiful "ring shots" - where the rings are placed in position, either on the cake, or cushion, next to a flower or glasses of "bubbly" - the list goes on.....

My question is - when do you take them?

Do you simply ask the B&G to "give you their rings" (only an hour after they put them on) - or do you (depending on what you are including in the photo) set the shot up a week before?

Just curious.

I usually do it at the reception, 90% of people are happy to take their rings off for a few minutes. Sometimes I shoot them before the wedding if I get to shoot the groom.

Thanks Tim.... and the remaining 10%?

Do you simply skip the shot, or set it up sometime after the wedding?

Some of our brides and grooms haven't wanted ring shots. Those that have, we usually either shoot them beforehand wherever the groom/bestman are (there are 2 of us and we normally split up before wedding to cover more), or we shoot them on their hands after. We did once shoot them a couple of weeks in advance.

5% I shoot just on their hands, 5% of the time there are no ring shots taken.

Margin of error - 25% ;)

I take them at the reception. You have more time to get a nice shot that way.

Right before the ceremony. Typically people are staying around waiting for it to start.

Always before the ceremony which kinda limits how creative you can get but it just doesnt seem right asking the couple to take them off just after they have put them on during the ceremony.... think were a bit more traditional about things like that in the UK though, kinda like the B&G not seeing each other before the ceremony on the day of the wedding, where in other countries it looks very normal to meet up before hand.

I always take them at the reception, I've only had one couple that didn't want to take their rings off, for them I just took a picture of their hands. Most couples have seen the pics I do with the rings, and like it a lot, so usually when I go over and ask for their rings they do it without even asking why.

If I can't get them before, then I will ask for them during the meal (and promise to give them back!) I try and mention it before during one of our chats that I'll usually do the ring shots then if they are happy taking them off... have had no complaints so far.

Naturally if they didn't want to remove them and they wanted them shot I'd do some kind of (awful!!) hand shot.

I have taken shots before and after the ceremony. I just take shots with the rings on or I ask for them during the portraits. Never had a problem.
