Well in the next week or so I will be replacing my gear which was stollen out of my jeep.

I have 8K to spend to replace what was lost

Here is what I am replacing for sure

70-200 2.8L is
24-105 f4L is

as for camera bodies and the rest I am not sure I had a 30D and xti kit lens with both that wont be getting replaced as I never used them.

I am considering the 5D and maybe some more glass or a 1D mark III not sure though, I understand the 1dm3 has some issues but so long as it will be a firmware fix I can deal with that and I know the 5D has been out for awhile, ugg I hate this I had no plans on near gear at all this thru me off big time. Any help on the ups of going with a one body of another would be great.

My Gear: 1D Mark III,30D, 24-105 f/4L IS, 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 85mm 1.8, 100mm 2.8 Macro, 580ex II Flash 430ex Flash lowepro AW 300.

Sounds like a firmware fix is still in the "we hope" stage. Feeling adventurous? :p

I just may take the chance since this is canons flagship camera and currently their top of the line model save the 1ds. I rarely use AI Servo anyways as I mainly to portrait type work and still non moving objects.

I know having your kit stolen sucks, but I gotta say that I love the spending money threads.

In the absence of all other things, such as what kind of stuff you like to shoot, here's what I'd get with prices off B&H.

$2,539.95: Canon EOS 5D
$679.00: EF 17-40mm 4L
$1,139.00: EF 24-70 2.8L
$1,359.00: EF 50 1.2L
$1,699.00: EF 70-200 2.8L IS
Total: $7,415.95

That's about the most general purpose kit I can think of with a bit left over for some 4GB Extreme IVs if need be.

I'd replace the 50 1.2 with the 85 1.2. I think it's more useful with the 5D.

Thanks imaginos, that would make a nice kit. So you think the 5D is still well worth investing in at its current age? may be worth it as I do like that glass line up though I would have to lean towards the 85mm lens over the 50mm as when I had a 50mm I rarely used it.

I'm quite adamant that, all other things being equal, and on a dollar for dollar basis, the 5D is the best camera that Canon makes. Even though the strongest rumors have it being replaces early-ish next year, I would have no regrets buying one. It's image quality is superb, the viewfinder is big and friendly, it's high ISO is just now being threatened by less-costly cameras, it's big without being clumsy, and otherwise awesome to shoot with. It's everything you would [conventionally] expect out of a 1 series at half the price. Rather than showing it's age, I say it's still showing how far ahead of its time it was. Just in case there are any lingering doubts: I am fully onboard with the 5D kool-aid.

I sold mine about three months ago. A friend who does weddings was in somewhat-emergency need of a new body, I had a new 1D3, the rest writes itself. You mentioned portraits and stills; this is certainly the camera for that. The only reason I moved up to a 1D3 is that I'm going to be doing A LOT of travel over the next three years without much opportunity for repairs; I really needed something with a great deal of ruggedness and a 1Ds2/1Ds3 just didn't fit the budget. I can easily foresee myself getting another 5D in the next 18 months as a clear-weather/backup, 5D2 or not. I dunno; we'll see. But selling it was a damn difficult thing to do.

[Edit] If the supposed 5D's replacement looming so close is a concern, you might think of getting a 30D on the cheap to keep you shooting until then. Just keep in mind that we had 18+ months of the 40D coming out "next month" according to all manners of "distributors." So who knows when the 5D will get replaced.

Well if that's the case, then go forth and conquer. I only chose the 50 1.2L because 50mm is a classic prime and it was somewhat less expensive than the 85. Well, that and drip sealing is important for me because, as I said...ruggedness. From what I've seen/heard, the 85 is a little sharper anyway.

Definitely let us know how it works out.

how about the 16-35 2.8 instead of the 17-40. that extra mm adds quite a bit and as always, 2.8 adds a whole lot.

my thoughts exactly....85 1.2 (get a used mk1 version to save some dough) is a GLORIOUS lens on any camera, but especially on a 5d.

5d
16-35 mk2 (for extra corner sharpness)
24-70
70-200 2.8 IS
85 1.2 mk1

^^^^that is one sexy kit.

Also, do think about buying used. I had a bunch of gear stolen and I replaced most of it with used gear and the insurance company had no problem with that and I saved a boatload of money doing so. Buying used can ensure you get a sharp copy too, because you can look at the samples of the lens before buying. Buy from a good reputable seller with positive feedback either on the buy/sell forum here, or on fredmiranda and you will save quite a bit of cash and thus allow yourself to buy more camera related toys (tripod, batteries, cf cards, etc)

Thanks cathpah, I have looked at some used stuff problem is I found a used 70-200 2.8 IS for 1500, I can get it brand spanking new with warrenty for 199 more from BH, If I am able to find a better price I would consider used, and after the problems a friend had with a used 30D (flawless outside condtion) but died shortly after he got it I would rather again have the warrenty.
