I just recently bought a 1D classic from someone, its missing the focusing screen. My question is...should i take it into cannon service center Monday and have it checked, calibrated/maintenance, clean sensor, replace focus screen...

OR

should i head over to sammys pick up a focusing screen and call it a day...

The guy whom i bought it from didn't tell me when the last time it got serviced was...it has under 50k shots...

I'm leaning over taking it in, just because its used and i know nothing about it...let me know what you guys think!

It's due for a tune-up. Send it to Canon.

Yeah, find an excuse to drive or take the train to the Irvine Service Center and get it cleaned for free. They may check the rest of it out at the same time.

Yup. Especially since it's a 1-series.

Might be asking a stupid question here...but are you absolutely sure the focusing screen is missing?

Yes,

1.the guy who i bought it from told me it was missing.
2. when you look through it you can tell its missing.
3. I pushed the little metal lever to release the holding bracket (not sure about the terminology here..) and it didn't pop ....(#1 Verified)

So i went to canon they said to clean calibrate etc its $180!! wow it just seems like alot...i was thinking more like $60...the focusing screen was only $9!! wow! its 45 retail...(Sammys, B&H). I haven't paid, when i pick up my camera maybe i'll complain...

Have 1D owners paid this much for cleaning and calibration clean/adjust??

I see...if that's the case then it probably is indeed missing. It's just that in the past (and maybe not on these forums), I've read people complaining that their focusing screen was missing. Moving from a XXXD series or similar, they expected to see the focusing points marked out in the focusing screen. Yup, all 45 of them.

How would a photographer even see with all the focusing points marked out? Nevertheless they were simply mistaken. The focusing screen was indeed there but they were not aware of how different it looked.

Canon service is usually expensive because of the labor costs. While I've never sent a camera in for CLA, a shutter change for my current camera tells me that labor is more than half of the cost we pay...the actual parts are really quite inexpensive.
