EOS Utility wont install!?

I recently upgraded from a Digital Rebel to 5D. I never had any problems downloading photos using Zoombrowser with my Rebel, but now im having nightmares with the new Solution Disk, Version 14.2:

I uninstalled all the old drivers and programs and ran the new installation disk. Everything seemed to install fine. When i plug my camera in, the default program highlited in the download box is "Camera Window"; when i select it, i get a "Camera Window does not recognize this camera" error. When i open either Zoombrowser or DPP, the EOS Utility tool is grayed out, so it has not installed. EOS Utility 2.0 does not appear as one of the items on the menu for intallation--is it part of the Zoombrowser or DPP installation?

My OS is Windows XP SP1--i noticed the installation instructions say "SP2" but i have all essential updates so i assume this shouldn't be the problem. When I manually open the Software folder on the installation disk, there is a EOS Utility folder (8.1 MB) in there so it is definitely on the disk!

I guess as a last resort i can try using a card reader, but id really like to use the software if possible! Any ideas? Thanks

If you noticed that it says SP2 in the instructions, that’s what it means: SP2, not SP1 but..

Open Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall everything that begins with Canon.
Restart computer and install SP2.
Google for AutoPatcher if you have problems registering Windows.
Restart comp again and install new Canon software.

Good luck and welcome to POTN!

yes, give the SP2 a try. I had the same problem trying to install a round of updates downloaded from Canon's website. I too had SP1 + a bunch of other updates, but EOS Utility wouldn't install until I installed the full SP2. Good luck!

Nope, according to support at MS, with the updates i should have automatically gotten SP2. Ill recheck my error log, since there was something in there about being unable to find some WIndows file. I really dread having to use a card reader, since i had my OS wiped out by one a year ago.
PS; autopatcher apparently was shut down by the MS legal team last month--what a surprise.

Which doesn’t mean that you cannot find earlier version.
As we speak I am downloading version 5.6 – I don’t need it, just wanted to make sure that it was available.

But if, for whatever reason, you prefer not to go with SP2, discuss your problem with Microsoft, I am sure that they’ll be able to help you.

Ok, might as well document this in case any others have the same issue.
Error in log that comes up for Zoombrowser is "Generate Activation Context" failed for the file: MFC80U.DLL, and Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC is "not installed". Apparently this has to do with run time libraries for Visual C++. Im too annoyed that new software is always more annoying than old, so ill try this fix tomorrow.

Let's confirm that you have SP2, rather than assume that the update procedure has done so. Either right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and select properties, or if you're using the 'new' crappy XP look, click on the Start button and right click on the My Computer entry in the menu and select properties. This will bring up the System Properties dialogue box and it should show whether you have SP1 or SP2 etc.

From memory, Camera Window is NOT compatible with EOS utility, it's one or the other. Read the readme files on the CD though, I could be wrong, I'm going from memory :)

This is a perfect example of Canon's very kludgy attempts at software imho, very very poor work from Canon. They really do need to hire a software developer who can professionally package these software products properly. I have to say that I have been totally unimpressed with Canon's efforts here.

Dave

PS EOS Utility is a biatch to get working properly from my experience, and I'm certainly not PC illiterate - in fact I'm ex IT and fluent in Mac OS (both OS 9 and X, but I prefer OS X by far), Winblows (my least favourite OS), BSD (freeBSD), UNIX (Solaris) and GNU/Linux.
