hello, greeat to have found this board! I've owned my Rebel xti for about 6 months now. I am totally new to DSLR cameras, but have always enjoyed photography with my 35mm cameras. I am still so lost with my xti though. I am pleased for the most part, but have not learned how to use the settings and terminolgy is greek to me! One problem I am having is when I download on my new computer, which has Windows Vista, alot of my images are corrupted. When I downlaod on old computer (XP), I have no problems. How can I "cure" the problem with Vista? Thanks in advance! Michele

How do you download? How are they corrupted? RAW or JPEG or both? We can help if you give us some more information to work with...

I have run into this with Vista a couple times. Mainly if a named a file like:
135atf2.8iso1600.jpg

You can not have two periods in a file name. (obviously..) The file is written to an extension that is unreadable.

Are you using the EOS utility to download them from the camera?

Are you downloading directly from the camera or are you using a compact flash card reader? Vista sucks btw, probably why it doesn't work in the 1st place. Just wait 7 years till MS finally gets the product right. :p

I download using the EOS utility, but have also tried with Adobe Elements. This is how they are saved: IMG_0471.jpg from EOS utility. I have never taken RAW pics as I am not sure what that is or how to do it! I am DLing directly from camera. I didi just go amd purchase a SanDisk multi card reader, however when I got home, it does not say it is compatible with Vista. I also bought a brand new memory card and I re-format each time I download pics to computer.

OK, that's helpful. It sounds to me like the camera's device driver (the bit of software that tells the computer how to communicate with the camera) might not be compatible with Vista. This page (external link) on the Canon Europe web site allows you to download updated drivers and programs that are Vista-compatible. (Note: In Europe your XTi is known as a 400D.)

Incidentally there's a long thread here that discusses Vista incompatibility issues.

Most card readers are simple plug and play devices using regular USB drivers built into the OS. Just plug it in and see if vista will recognize the device, it should.

I'm having a problem with corrupted images sometimes as well. Usually it happens while I'm reviewing photos, one minute they're fine, another I'll be looking through the photos one at a time, the CF light will light up for a bit and the camera will pause for a few seconds, then the next picture shows up in thumbnail format only saying "File Corrupted" below... Luckily it doesn't happen often, and it's only on a single photo at a time.
