To summarize this entire thread with its 4 simple main points...

People who bought the 40D like it or don't like it for various reasons.
People who didn't buy the 40D don't like it or like it for various reasons.
People who like the 40D bought it or didn't buy it for various reasons.
People who don't like the 40D didn't buy it or bought it for various reasons.

It does not get any simpler than that, does it!

Nevertheless, for whatever reason, it gets more complicated than it should.

Oops, sorry I missed your complaint. Duly noted :D More annoying to me than the plastic hinge is the fact that you have to dig your fingernail into the latch to get it to open. I just know that one day I'll be in a hurry and bend my fingernail backwards trying to get that battery door open. But that's not so much a build issue as it is a design issue.

So so so sorry to say this... but RTFM!

Canon 40D Manual Page 180

-> Put the camera on a flat surface and hold it firmly so it does not fall.
->Open battery compartment cover and pull it out at a slanted angle to remove.
->Store the detached battery cover in the battery grip
->To reattach the battery compartment cover, slant it at the same angle when it was removed and insert the covers hinge into the camera.

If we wanna get technical, its faster and easier to remove than the 5D... and not meaning to take the piss but this info should solve your problems with the finger and also with how much it sh#ts you to use.

Well, you might not be meaning to "extract the urine" (to use a Terry Pratchett phrase), but you are, and for no reason. To you I say RTFP (Read The F'in Post). I already said I don't have the battery grip, so why in the world would I be removing the door like your instructions say??? I'm talking about simply opening the door. You know, opening it to get to the battery but leaving it attached and whatnot, like all people without a battery grip have to do from time to time as the battery runs down.

So, Master of the Manual, do you have any tips on how I can easily open the battery door without digging my fingernail into the tiny latch and risking bending my fingernail back every time? That would be super helpful.

Sorry mate.. i stand corrected.

Your previous post quoted Ed rader as talking about the plastic hinge on the door and then went onto say jamming your nail into the little gap - i believed to be talking about the little moving plastic lugs that hold the door in position with at first look require poking to remove the door - which i did but soon realised by reading the manual that i didnt need to.

Only thing for you is either sharpen the nails, do mini-finger workouts or purchase a Canon Approved battery door wand. Or get the grip and have the same problem with the sliding bloody latch that opens the dual battery door.

Yeah, Ed and I were talking about 2 different aspects of the battery door design.

My thumbs still retain some muscle definition from my heavy console game-playing days, but the problem isn't strength. Maybe I should get fake fingernail extensions.

No worries. It's always a good day when I get to use a Terry Pratchett phrase

Maybe you can use the new gear to make money on the side and cover the cost you already incurred, if not that of the spa too.

If you can offer a spa to your wife for xmas, I don't see how she could not forgive you.

Odd - I've a 5D, 40D and 30D and the 40D feels far better built to me than the 30D. It feels on a par with the D200 to me, which is to say great.

I feel the same way. The 40D feels better than the 5D...

The 40D is a cheap camera. It shares a lot of the XTi parts in it.

Many (if not all) Canon EOS cameras share parts with each other. It just makes business sense (e.g. Toyota-Lexus, all GM divisions, Ford-Mercury, etc.)

I guess I could turn your statement around and say that the 40D shares components and features with the EOS 1D-Mark III camera. Would that make the 40D an expensive camera? ;)

.

-Canon EOS 40-D with vertical/battery grip, wireless remote shutter release
-Canon 10-22mm F3.5 USM (with hood)
-Canon 70-300mm F4 EF IS USM (with hood)
-Canon 28-135mm F3.5 EF IS USM (with hood)...and many more items.

Cameras are tools. Sometimes it takes more than one to get the job done. And they always come out with a better tool for the job.

haha :) laughed at that one ed :) funny too because i took that pic as one for our award entries a few years back on a fuji s7000 - that camera didnt last too long for the awards, hence the 'excuse' to get a 5d... really need the wide side of things for up against pool fences and that, you know hehe...

... so why the hell do you need a 40d....?? "errr zooming in on the waterfeatures??!!..." "...might see an eagle flying by while out taking pool shots.." - which is only 1 week out of the year ::)
