I've not shot at Smith Barn, but I have a couple of friends that have - tough venue. Looks like you pulled it off, though!

Looking over them I think you have a good grasp of getting the background exposure, but a few of them (like #6 in the 2nd set) have too much fill in flash resulting in over exposure of the person, when you decrease the exposure in PPing you then can lose the nice background.

I see you were shooting the flash in manual, do you prefer that to E-TTL? I shoot mostly in manual also BTW.

to be perfectly honest, i'm just starting to understand flash photography, and don't really have a preference/know the difference.

it was a tough veunue because of the huge barn doors at one end of the barn being open and flooded with mid-day sun, the exposures in the room were all over the place.
