Nikon D80 vs Canon 40D

Not sure if this is where you post this, but heres it go's!
I was shopping for the Nikon D80 when I began to review Canon's new 40D! I am now on the fence! Because i have to start somewhere buying new equipment....I was wondering if anyone had any insight of whether I should buy the Nikon D80 or spend a few more $$'s and buy the Canon 40D???!! Any info would help! I shoot mostly wildlife....And use my camera almost daily!!!

I compared the D80 to the 400D when I was making that purchase and went with the 400D for better ISO performance. I would maintain that the same holds true with the 40D comparison and given the improvements in color gradation, etc. in the 40D over 400D I would say the benefits are even higher.

your on a canon forum... i think a lot of people are going to tell you to buy the 40D we love our canons here.

i think if buy the canon.. overall you are going to be happier with it in the long run. when i was a nikon user.. i ran into a problem that pissed me off beyond words. they didnt make any lenses for my film body. and i wanted a tele, and a wide angle. they said that i would have to upgrade my body to do so.

with canon. most of their lenses besides the old mounts are interchangeable between the bodies. i think the 20d ot 10d can only take ef-s lenses.

you will be happy with your canon. you have POTN here to help you in every which way you can think of, and canon is just the best. thats all there is to it.

if you got the 40d. you would not regret your purchase at all.

The short answer is you're going to have to go handle both, determine which feels better to you ergonomically, what features are most important to you and how much you're willing to spend. Remember that no matter what brand you go with, you're investing in a system, not simply a camera. Especially when you take lenses, flashes and varioius accessories into consideration.

When i was shopping for the Canon 40D i ran across the Nikon D80 (is what i meant to say) and was wondering what everyone thought of it!

I do prefer Canon over Nikon though.

The D80 is a great camera, but the 40D is a better camera in just about every category. Now, if the benefits are worth the extra money to you, only you can say, but if you can afford the 40D, I'd suggest it. The only real advantage to the Nikon is the flash system Nikon uses is "supposedly" superior to Canon's. Either body will gain you access to a vast camera system with outstanding lenses and accessories, and you'll probably be happy with either. I just think you'll be a little happier with the Canon.

At the end of the day they are only tools so go down to a shop and have a good look and feel of both and I would rekon whichever one you choose will serve you well. My two cents are Canon for high ISO performance.

One more question, could anyone tell me how good this lens is?

One of the best lenses you can buy (and I say that as a very happy owner of its main "rival" the Canon 100-400mm zoom).
