HELLO!!!! Basically im seriously considering buying a Canon EOS 400D, ive had little experience with this sorts of camera apart from times ive used friends ones. What i mean to ask, is there anything i should be aware of before i buy, and also while im here, ive noticed that i find it hard to see clearly through the viewfinder thingy and i believe this is due to my poor eyesight. ive read that this can be sorted out by editing the diopter?? is this something that is easily done or will it take a lot of work???

i would REALLY REALLY appreciate a response ASAP cause i wanna buy soon :)
Thank you!

its a great camera. i have had mine for about 9 months now, and i love the little thing. it is easy to use. easy to under stand. like any dslr camera will take tim and practice, and lots of reading on how to set it up.
i dont suggest running out and buying lenses for it right a way.. stick with the one that it uses for now. and really really learn how to use that camera. and dont rely on your poor eyesight thinking you have a great picture.. pit it in auto focus, and let the lense see for you.. or wear glasses. i dont know. but you wont regret buying it. just learn to use it. and youll have great pictures in no time.

The diopter is easy to use. It's simply a little dial you turn one way or another until it looks right to your eyes.

Buying from a reputable dealer is the first step, preferably a dealer where you can actually hold it and try it.

The adjustment for the eye (diopter adjustment) is of a small wheel located at the upper right edge of the eyepiece (as you face the rear of the camera). It has rough edges (little notches) and there is a white line on one location on the wheel.

While holding the camera up to your working eye rotate the wheel back and forth until the black squares in the viewfinder are clear and bright. There is usually enough adjustment to accommodate most eyeglasses wearers (it works for me).

However if your eyes have a very strong plus or minus correction (plus being myopic) there may not be enough adjustment. If this is the case, Canon sells an attachment that will correct this problem.

B & H is a reputable mail order dealer where many on this forum deal. The problem with mail order is that you can't test the dioptric adjustment to be sure it will accommodate your eye.

I agree with buying from a reputable dealer. There are a lot of websites out there that are actively pulling all manners of scams with camera equipment, and just taking the web page at face value is risky. http://www.bhphotovideo.com (external link) is my preferred dealer (which is something you will frequently read on these forums). A lot of people use http://www.adorama.com (external link) and have had similarly positive experiences. Also consider the big commercial outlets such as BestBuy and Amazon. Or at the very least, use those places for reference. If you dealer you're looking at is trying to sell you the camera for less than 90% of what B&H is going for, start getting suspicious. If it's less than 80%, I'd say it's definitely a scam. If you look at the dealer's review and you're still not certain, these forums can probably help.
