Gaaaahhh! That's scary. Now I'm going to have nightmares. In any case, it's a very sharp picture of a goose. One of the people here at work is in line to get a 40D next week so I am hoping to play with it and make a decision soon.

This is a GOOSE! This is also not the first time that a POTN post has claimed a GOOSE as a duck shot. Someone a while back claimed a Canada Goose as a duck shot. Canada Geese are very distinctly not ducks and this shot is also not a duck. Please people, let's not embarass ourselves... the birders in the bird section are probably laughing very much out loud...

Good shot of a goose, though!

Close enough? Both waterfowl?

Looks great...the 100% crop is impressive.

Quite clearly there is something wrong with this 40D of yours, and needs sending back and changing, to take a picture of a duck and it gives a goose image, as sharp as the picture might be, it is still faulty :)

Hope you are enjoying it as much as me :)

Hey, my 40D did not come with an accurate bird guide either. I think I need to bring it in for service!

Why can't a goose pose for a duck shot? Discrimination!

It is not that a goose cannot pose for a duck shot, but rather that a shot of a goose cannot be a duck shot! Even if a goose poses for a duck shot, the result is always a goose shot. :D

What is really important here is that a Goose Shot is a lot easier than a Duck Shot.

Geese, more or less, are tame and certainly are curious... they are quite the posers, in fact, thus they turn out tack sharp in images (and I suspect that is why so many POTNers are claiming geese as ducks to show off their new wares).

Ducks are shyer, more aloof, harder to get close to (maybe cuz they get shot at (lead pellet shot) a lot more than geese (geese, like your uncle Ted, are loud, boisterous, in your face, quick with the smile and the joke, fat and easily duped – thus they get their heads chopped off and then are stuffed).

I respect the POTN Duck Shot. It ain't so easily come by (tho we are all a little embarassed inside that we we still get so excited to point our fancy image makers at such a lowly, common fowl). There is something primal in it: see a Duck, Shoot it.

Save the axe for the goose.

Are you kidding? Ducks are great on a plate as well! Have you ever had roast duck? Peking (Beijing) Duck? I could go on...

Agreed with the rest of what you said, though!
