I just had my EOS 400D back from service (underexposure issue). Still as is so far but need more time to judge.

I have no idea what happened but the counter suddenly is showing IMG_ 9920. It was 1020 when I left it there. It does not make sense that they shooted 8000 frames to test it.

Any ideas on what happened.

Th folder name on the card was 100Canon and inside last frame was 1020.

Now the folder name is 897Canon and images started at 9920.

I tried formating the Crad with the camera, it erased 100Canon and new images are in folder 897Canon and images are 1020 and up.

Please advise me ASAP.

Thanks

If a card is used with higher numbered images from another body on it , your body will pick up the numbering from the number on the card.

The service center likely used a card with other images on it when testing. It doesn't mean they shot that many with your body though.

Just had the same thing with my 30D I sent away.

Format your card outside of the camera.
Select Auto Reset in the Camera file numbering menu.
Turn off camera
Out formatted card in camera
Turn camera on

Your should now be back to folder 0001 and image 00001

If you have a second card you can set the camera back the way it was. Save the card with the latest shots/folder on it. Take a second card and format it with the computer. Put it in your camera and do a manual reset of file numbering. Turn off the camera and put in the CF with the latest files/folders on it and turn camera back on. You should now be back where you were.

Yeah the shot #s get hosed up by the CFs they use at the service center.

I guess you follow whiteflyer's steps, copy IMG_1020 back to the card from your PC (assuming you've still got it) and then hopefully the next shot would be IMG_1021.

Damn I wish I'd thought of doing that in the first place.

Just done it now and it does work, so I'm only a few hundred shots out. I wonder if I could rename a file say IMG_6000 to IMG_6200 and that would work ?

Yes you can :D

So my continuous numbering is more or less correct now . :):D:) Now I need to find out how to renumber/rename the few hundred files that are out of sync.

There are various tools to do this, or you could write a DOS script! Otherwise, seems you can do this in Photoshop 7 or Elements 2 - look at the following link:

The original discussion was around in-camera file naming not batch naming once downloaded to the pc.

Sorry blurryguy, just realized you were referring to helping rename the files that were downloaded and out of sync. I had thought you were suggesting running a DOS script to change the number in the body. My mistake. :o
