Was trying out some different settings. Mostly trying to adjust flash for better results under low lighting and shade. Found these guys under the eve of my house in the shade.
It took a lot of shots to get it anywhere near good. It also shot my nerves to pieces as I am highly allergic to wasp stings. Shooting them in the heat of the day had me a bit worried.
Anyway I got right in their faces about 20 times and they really didn't seem to be bothered. Good thing as I can be a big spaze when a wasp gets after me.

C&C welcome.

They look like they will give you a nasty sting. Good shots nice detail and the lighting is nice as well. That one at the top in #1 shot looks as if he is staring at you.

I didn't get as close as it looks. I was about 8-10 inches away. Pics are heavily cropped.

Yeah everytime I went out(about 6 times) they looked more and more like they were getting upset.

Thanks Bill, my nerves are still shot. I think I learned a bit about flash though.

in the first one they are asking the boss wasp - 'shall we take him?' - he's considering the question, lucky for you he tells 'em - 'nah, he's harmless'.

Yeah that one in the top shot started staring at me on about the third trip outside.

Evil? No, they're just protecting their species. Some type of paper wasp by the looks of it, similar to the ones I've got in our yard. I've found mine to be completely unaggressive so far.

I'm always amazed by the people who can get up close and personal to these guys (and yellow jackets). I'm always far more intimidated by them than they are by me.

Great shots Scott.

The only insect that I've found to be aggressive with no apparent reason was a type of Bee. I was walking the dog and it started flying aggressively at me. I quickened my pace and thought I'd left it behind.

A couple of minutes it was flying in my face. I'm afraid I swatted it with my hand.

It was soon back up, and very angry. I ran a couple of hundred yards and carried on walking briskly. The next thing I heard was a buzz like a stuka. The bee landed on my arm and stung me. :(

I've never know such aggressive behaviour before or since. I do keep telling my missus that I know someone who was kicked to death by a spider...
