This review has been rather thoroughly discussed and mostly trashed at dpreview.

Money quote from that CNet review that many here will likely, ahem, disagree with:

"Despite its many attractions, the Canon EOS 40D doesn't clearly outshine the Nikon D80, which costs a lot less."
