I hate neck straps. They are always catching on something--chairs, arms, kids---you name it. After my tripod mounted XTi neck strap caught on a passersby at Bryce Canyon and almost fell to the ground, I decided I didn't want it on anymore. I bought a grip, which is good on the XTi, and an E-1 Canon handstrap. When I bought my new 40D, the size was perfect and I didn't need a grip. What to do? I found a web site that was recommended on POTN that sold plates that you screwed into your tripod hole that served as a recepticle for your hand strap. Perfect! A bonus was that they make one that doubles as a Manfrotto quick release plate! The site is Camdapter and the one I got is for the 30D but as you can see it works. You can even access your battery door without having to take the plate off. What keeps it from twisting is a slightly raised rubberized (neoprene) gasket that forms a tight seal when you tighten the plate with the included Allen wrench. The set-up is a bit pricey for the whole shebang---$70 with shipping for both the plate and the E-1 Canon grip, but the alternatives are a plastic Hakuba that doesn't sit well and you have to take off to get the batteries out or mount it on a tripod, or the Nikon strap with the same limitations. You could always buy the grip, but IMHO they look like crap and unless you have really large hands are unneeded. Here are some pictures of the set-up--no C&C's, please--they were taken with an ELPH. Bye the way--if you want to, you can even use the neck strap with it if you want---the E-1 comes with a triple eyelet to attach the neck strap (see first picture). Look up the instructions on the internet.
