Decided this morning that i was going to drive down to the NJ canon service center. Reason 1. was the amount of dust on the sensor even at night at f/4 its way to noticeable and reason 2. It is not focusing correctly. I had planned on using the focus chart last night, but my cat charles xavier thought the printer was disturbing his sleep so kept attacking the paper was it was fed into the printer. Subsequently jamming the printer with like 20 pieces of paper and causing something to not be right. Cause I can't print correctly.

Took about 40 minutes to get there, well 40 via my VW and not the F150. Walked right in and was greated with a friendly Hello! I guess once your out of NNJ the people are actually a lil nicer. Told him my issues with the camera and said the sensor cleaning would take like an hour, but the focus issue would need to be left. I said screw it, Im here with camera, just take care of it all and do just a basic check to make sure everything is the way its supposed to be a new camera. No charge for anything, said might take no more then 3 or 4 days. Im hoping i might get the call tomorrow. Got home and I even had the 2 emails. 1 for the repair and 1 stating that i had the 24-105 f/4l with the camera.

Overall first impression was very good, good customer service, knowledgeable staff. We'll see how it goes when I pick it up.

I took my camera only once for cleaning and inspection to Canon center in Mississauga, Ontario, they were friendly and they did a good job.
Took them two weeks ‘tho, but that was within what they promised.

FINALLY!! Canon calls me today, 2 weeks 2 days later I have my camera back from canon. They had it in there posession longer then I did. I feel like i have learn how to use it all over again  The repair just said "autofocus corrected and adjusted using supplied lens." That was pretty much it. Didnt say what exactly they did and the counter person said the just adjusted a few things. Whatever, it didn't cost me anything except about 2 hours of driving.

My friend is having focusing issues with most of his lenses as well. Front focusing to be exact. I'm wondering if AF issue is endemic to the Digic III processing as 1DM3 seems to have the same thing (hopfeully fixed by the the last 1DM3 firmware upgrade).

Yep, my thoughts too!
It is possible that Digic III has issues with AF and that it affect both cameras.
Justo more pronounced and visible on 1D3 than on 40D, but basically the same..

I'm not sure but I would assume AF algorhythm is a function of the processor/computer chip in the camera. I know for Mark III that they allow for adjustments and I'm wondering if there is a bug in the system. Only speculations. Maybe Canon will release a firmware update for the 40D to correct the AF as apparently, you can fix it via a firmware per Mark III's experience.

No, my guess is the AF problems are a hardware based design flaw along the lines of the 1D MkIII, and the 40D is having similar, if not identical problems. Imaging Resource has a full review, and discusses at some length AF issues. Additionally, I have been in email correspondence with a well-known photographer/reviewer who confirms the AF problems with the 40D. I think is a reflection of a fundamental flaw with Canon's new AF design. There are increasing reports of users on this site as well as other sites of AF problems with the 40D.

And again with the bull.

All it takes is getting used to the camera.
