Challenge #138 - 'Wood'

I’m not planning to set too many restrictions, just some phrases to describe the theme better.

Due to my English, it means that you must start to use your imagination right now to understand what I mean :)

It may be a tree, but probably it is better the detail of a knot in it, or its bark.

If it is wooden furniture, better the texture of the wood in it rather that the whole thing.

The marks of weather or aging on a log may be a good subject.

A splinter can be a subject on its own if it is interesting enough.

That is it. Almost everything related to wood with focus on a clever interpretation.

Enjoy

  • 3Dart - G3 - wood pile
B&W worked well. The pile itself is an interesting subject. At a first glance, I thought of the trees as a better background, but then I saw that the clear wall brings the darker pile contour to the foreground better. B&W is a difficult matter. Well done.
    -

  • Maureen Souza - Pro1 - Broken Branch
Influenced by the previous image, I wondered what if this one was B&W? and I found that color is essential here. The color contrast between the green leaves and the wooden branch makes the branch the main subject and the darker borders of the leaves creates the sense of depth in the center. Colors are vibrant. Nice picture Maureen.
    -

  • Boutty - G6 - Emerged
I love the composition, the wavy shadows due the shallow water and the old look of the picture in sepia. The interleaved branches are indeed a great subject just emerged from the sand!
There is a small problem with the random noise added to the wood and water in this particular photo: it is very similar to the texture of the sand.
    -

  • Pauly_G - G7 - Drifting
The signs of aging in the logs due to the water and the waves are great, mainly the details in the foreground logs. I usually avoid ‘recipes’, but if you raise the exposure in the bottom of the picture a bit leaving the detail in the sky intact, you will enhance the interesting foreground.
    -

  • grandadraymond - G6 - Pallet's
Interesting arrays of wood! I am not sure if they are piles of wood for natural drying or platforms for fork lifters :( (they have a similar look for me)
Anyhow, the clear left sides create the volume and the color marks bring a merry look to the piles, as if they were painted by kids.
Without a detrimental effect to the overall picture, the intense red near the top of the center pile seems the consequence of too much color enhancement.
    -

  • whitedime - G5 - fire
Wood and fire have been together since the early stages of the Earth, even before mankind.
Very nice capture, accurate exposition and colors. The textures for fire, wood and ashes are beautifully mixed and the lower red spot behind the dark log is great. Very nice picture!
    -

  • marie - Pro1 - wood made fit for a king
    Certainly an impressive wooden work.
Regarding your picture, the neutral background colors and the brightly colored leather are responsible of the contrast, leaving in the middle the differences between shadows and light to built the volume and the really subtle changes of the wood color to nicely describe the textures. Another nice picture from you, as usual.
    -

  • teekay - G1 - Round Barn Interior (circa 1875)
I know almost nothing about farms, but the umbrella-like structure of the barn is awesome as are the different textures and shapes there.
The knots of the central pole, the stain marks of the water spilled from the bright holes in the roof, those bird’s or wasps’ nests ( ) adhered to the inside of the roof all pretty near to basic reddish color of the wood are part of an interesting color palette.
I wonder how you got the lighting in the bright radial spars without blowing up the central pole.
    -

  • AeroSmith - G9 - Grain
I love the old trees with the twisted branches and rough bark. I like the close detail of the picture and how you captured it. The scale of the subject is not clear from the picture. I’m not telling that the lack of scale is a fault, I’m just curious about how close were you for the picture.
It seems that the light comes from the lower left; that made me think that the picture is upside down but probably it is not. It would be interesting a description of the lighting conditions there.
    -

  • IainB - G1 - 'The Worm has turned'
The healthy color of the wood contrast with the holes (are those termites?)
The lateral light enhances the textures, and the shadows bring volume to a somewhat flat subject. I also like the composition with mainly horizontal lines except for the vertical support at left.
Another undetermined scale, either those are big worms or it is a small wooden object.
I know that both teekay and IainB are good photographers, but it is interesting to note how the G1 holds its quality when compared to the other Gs and the Pro1.
    -

  • Carolys - G7 - Wet
In a challenge with another topic, it would be harder to determine if it is wood or stone. Either wood or stone, it resembles a dolphin :)
I like the reflections of the wet wood, the water and the sand. The branches and leaves on the foreground hide the simpler beauty of the subject behind them though.
    -

  • wd-40 - G9 - Does a bear **** in the wood
I guess the bears will not use the booths, but those are beautiful trees.
I would like to see them pictured in a sunny day, either in color or B&W.
The slightly blown-up cloudy sky and the soft and subtle shadows yield a somewhat flat image to me.

Congratulations to all.

Many thanks to those who participated in this challenge and to the frequent participants that keep these challenges running.

Welcome new and almost new participants, I hope you enjoyed the challenges enough to continue posting. :)

A note about the rules:

There were two pictures smaller than the required size.
As usual, I notified by PM about the issue and each participant replied with a note that they were unable to fix them this time.
They are still on display and I commented them because they are on topic and have enough quality to contend, but I removed them from my list before picking the winners.

I encourage to all to fine-tune the entries according to the rules in the future.
