Hi All

Only just had the chance to get the 40D out of the box 2 days after getting it.

Inserted battery switched on and nothing, zilch, zero oh b%&***er I thought better get it packed up to be taken back to the shop.

OK quick check through as whther there is an incidently cause. Cut a not too long story short I took the battery out and reinserted but still no go, hmmm! try to just push down on the battery aginst its end stop and gave it a little wobble (or what passes for a wobble in the space. Lo and behold it starts it when when switched on.

About hundred shots of 'rubbish' just to quickly work through some of the settings and all seems well.

Not sure what could have been wrong but I do take care when inserting the battery and CF card and yes the battery was in and locked down the first time;) so I surmise it was just an oddity which most folk may never have seen because they maybe just push the battery in that little bit harder.

Well, so far so good but will have to ensure that if it happens again it happens soon and repeatably in case it needs to go back.

:)

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

make sure you don't have a similar issue again anytime soon.

if you do, send it back right away. better to have a week or two without your camera than the perfect shot opportunity and a camera that won't function.

Lets just I was not best pleased. As for the pics give me chance;)

'First' impressions are that my 70-300 IS lens which was the one on the 350D at the time ~ simply swapped it across ~ focuses more quickly and unlike when used with the 350D where I sometimes I found that if I 'refocused' it would take a few goes to be spoton, with the 40D it is 'there' and refocusing has no effect.

Need to get used to the 2 wheel function ~ it took more than few moments to realise why I was dialing FEC in not EC ....doh!

Absolutely, though at this stage it makes me think there was a small bit of something (manufacturing debri?) that was stopping the battery making a good connection. I will run through a series of familiarisation 'runs' over the next few days and see if it 'fails' in any way. Should it do so then yes back to the shop pronto but like anything like this unless it can be reproduced it will be hard to show the fault.

As mentioned I took a slew of 'lets just see what this baby can do out of the box type images', a mixed bag - chasing a wasp around and because of too low Tv and too high ISO the crops look very poor - crockery looks good.

But this one is worth a quick look, the first is the full frame and the second a 100% crop 1/30 @ f5.6 at 300mm ISO1600 and if I recall incamera sharpness reduced to zero (the way I have my 350D set). Not shabby IMO though as I say because I have not tried too hard a lot of the images are sub optimal but heh new camera, new settings, slight chnage of tech required maybe.

These are just resized for the web no other PPing.
