Help!
Over the past few months I have been agonising over whether or not ot upgrade to the 5D from a 20D. I recently decided that I would- I shoot almost anything - people, landscapes, weddings etc anyting except fast moving sporty things. So the 5D sounded quite a good upgrade , nice FF (like the good 'ol film days), higher pixel count etc.. Then comes along this 40D! All the reviews sound good and many say it comes darn close to the 5D in IQ. I can live with cropped sensor of the 40D and its cheaper price tag!
what should I do?!?! I 'm in a dilema.
Anyone got both the 40D and the 5D? whats the pros and cons? should I save the money and get the 40 or go the extra and get a 'better' camera with the 5D?

thanks in advance for any help

Cheers
Rhys

It is a very close call, I would say you would be happier with 5D, but what Lenses do you own???

If you can afford it and do a lot of portrait shooting I would go with the 5D.

I would say 5D if you shoot at low light. I have had 30D for a year, and just got 40D. I have noticeabled 40D in high ISO (800+) is a little noisier than 30D. This is not a quantitative measure, just an observation. 40D noise is more pattern like and more "offensive" (I don't know a better word to describe). But 40D is cleaner at 100. So 5D is still a league above 40D at low light performance.

Besides the noise, I think 40D has far superior handling.

FWIW, I had pretty much decided to buy a 5D. Then the 40D came out. After a LOT of soul searching, I finally decided to buy the 40D.

Main reasons for my decision are:
1. 5D is old and has none of the new niceties of the 40D
2. The 2x cost factor

And yes, IQ isn't affected by most of these niceties, but overall it sure makes taking a picture a hell of a lot easier/better. And from what I can tell, IQ is practically indistinguishable between the two cameras.

And yes, yes I know the peanut gallery is going to chime in about FF. Blah-blah. But I've managed to convince myself that not going FF is actually a positive. I buy mostly FF lenses and the crop of a 40D cuts out the edges where most lenses have image problems. I think FF is dead Fred and 1.6 crops are the wave of the future.

Let the flames begin!

Hey Mike thanks for posting that....great info

seems a good strategy would be to get the 40D, enjoy it and pick up a used 5D when the mkII comes out if you still feel the need.

I was just in this exact spot two weeks ago. I shoot mostly landscape, a few wildlife shots and my kids too include Gymnastics. I went for the 5D and I love it. Before that I had a 300D.
