Of course hikin mike loves the 5d cause it's a HUGE jump from the Rebel to the 5D! :) No offense intended mike.

None taken. To be honest, I would have bought the 40D, but my parents wanted my to get another camera. Read this "Tree, Sky and Moon".

the captain,
I have both and well.....
When I got my 5D which was my 10D upgrade the difference was incredible, I mean no comparison the 5D kicked the 10D's butt... However now I picked up a 40D and honestly they are running neck and neck to me. So much so I am wondering if I should maybe sell my 5D while it still has a value. ??? I really love the 40D lcd screen as it is so much more color accurate vs. my 5D. I really like the live view, even though I don't use it much. I really like seeing ISO at all times on the 40D as the 5D only shows when you change it. The viewfinder is much brighter on my 40D then my 10D, but my 5D still wins for brightest. Well for macro and telephoto usage the 40D seems to win better (for me), then the 5D would with a 1.4 TC or walking closer to subject to get the same field of view. The 5D is superior for wide angle use (at least with my current lenses). The 40D is superior in speed in frames per second. The 40D is superior in cost as its less then half the price of the 5D. Color accuracy they seem to be very close if not the same (to my eyes). For high ISO noise they are again very close (to my eyes). AF is much better on the 40D vs. the 5D Also the AF points are spaced better (for me) on the 40D. The 5D is superior for lens mm relations ex. a 50mm lens is like a 50mm lens where the 40D with a 50mm lens is like an 80mm lens (in field of view).
Honestly they are both excellent cameras to my eyes! If wide angle photos are your most shot then I would suggest the 5D, if macro or telephoto (or you need speed for ex. sports) are your most shot then I would suggest 40D. If you shoot both (like I do) then maybe both if you can swing the $$$$

I own both as well and I typically pick up the 5D over the 40D for general photography. I used the 40D for a lot action oriented stuff since the AI Servo is definitely something to write home about, and of course the frame rate and crop factor contribute to that as well. For sports and other action oriented stuff, the 40D trumps the 5D. But overall, I find that when I want simplicity and pure shooting pleasure, I always grab the 5D first. I do love both cameras and they both do get a good work out. ;)

You need to list your Glass really, as 5D's I hear do need the higher end of the Glass Spectrum to get the right results

The IQ is not close and neither is the noise. For some reason 40D fanboys feel the need to hype their camera beyond all sensibilities because Canon dropped the ball big time on this upgrade. Plus they're looking down the barrel of the soon to be released d300 which is everything the 40D should have been. If I were you I would skip the 40D and wait a few months until the 5D's replacement comes out. Hopefully Canon will have learned their lesson and do this one right.

If you can afford the 5D, go for it, if you cant then the 40D is your only option.

The 5D is brilliant, I can manually focus with precision now, something I could never do with the smaller viewfinders on the cropped bodies, the advantages go on & on.

I keep seeing posts saying the 40D has weather sealing, well from what I have seen its only the CF & battery doors, its nowhere near proper weather sealing, so this wouldnt sway me, it does have lots of other bells & whistles to entice people to buy it, but again these dont interest me, I chose the 5D for several reasons but mainly for the FF & general stunning IQ, I also wanted 12.8mp, which seemed the best upgrade from 8mp, 10mp is hardly worth bothering with.

The 5D & 40D are totally different, not an ideal comparison, if you shoot a lot of fast action or telephotos are your main choice of lens, then the 40D would be ideal as it has the 1.6 crop which helps, if you dont do much of this, the 5D is the better choice, it always has been ever since its release, it all depends on what you shoot, the 5D is ideal for wideangle & low light, all of the cropped bodies are ideal at either general stuff if you dont specialize, or at wildlife etc.. this has pretty much been the general consensus since the 5D was released.

I find it strange if somebody was planning to get a 5D, then decides to buy a 40D, it must only be cost, as I know I needed a 5D for several reasons, also it suits my photography far better than a cropped body, you really need to know what you are planning on shooting, a sports photographer probably would hate the 5D, but in the right area of photography its pretty much perfect.

.....
12. The 5D has 9 focus points, the 40D has 9 cross-type focus points

Actually, the 5D has 9 visible AF points plus 6 "invisible" points, two of which are cross-type. The 6 invisible points are arranged in a circle around the center point and when activated (C-Fn-17 = 1) while the camera is in AI-Servo, act as assist AF points in a manner similar to how the 1-series operates when AF expansion is activated..

Otherwise, I agree with your list.

I find its the actual lens that effects AIServo most & the amount of keepers, its weird how when a new camera is released suddenly the older ones dont seem to cut it anymore, I have no problems tracking moving objects & get a high keeper rate, sure a higher FPS would be helpful but for me its more than adequate & gets the job done which is the main thing.

Yeah, I knew about the 6 invisible points, but I just didn't throw it in the comparison. I read it after I posted it and thought "Maybe I should mention the six invisible points", but just didn't change or edit it. ;)
