The 5D is brilliant, I can manually focus with precision now, something I could never do with the smaller viewfinders on the cropped bodies, the advantages go on & on.

With the EF-S screen in my 40D I can manually focus. Also on the tripod with LiveView I have the sharpest images I have ever seen!!!

But of course it would be nice to have an even larger viewfinder even though the 40D is very good as is.

I have the grid screen in both my 5D and 40D. It keeps my horizons level.

Yeah, I knew about the 6 invisible points, but I just didn't throw it in the comparison. I read it after I posted it and thought "Maybe I should mention the six invisible points", but just didn't change or edit it. ;)

Well, you knew that someone would nit-pick! :)

I don't think anyone alluded to that in this thread. Unless I missed something. ;) If anything I think the 5D is getting more praise than the 40D. I think we can all agree that the 5D is hardly an obsolete camera and it's quite natural for everyone to use it as a benchmark to compare newer models to.

Yes im planning on getting that screen, are the grids quite fine? as I wouldnt want them to get in the way too much.

I guess when somebody says the servo tracking is far better on the 40D than the 5D, it reminds me of the washing powder ads, "now your whites are really white" so they are now saying they wasnt any good befoe then? that wasnt what they were saying back then :p

I am curious, if the 5D was not a FF then would the majority think it was better? I can't comment on which is better since I don't own either but I get the feeling that some automatically praise the 5D soley based on the sensor size.

Well the size of the sensor does have a lot to do with why its so good at low noise.

Its also more like how SLR's used to be, nice large viewfinder & generally nicer to use all day.

If the 5D wasnt FF, then no it might not have much of an edge, this is why I prefer not to compare the two, you dont choose a 40D if you was originally going to get a 5D, that makes me wonder if that person has really thought all the options through, they are different beasties & require different lens lineups.

I have the optional Ee-S super precision matte AF screen, but I really haven't found much use for it. Never took the time to work with it, though so I'm probably not qualified to assess it's capability.

I primarily auto-focus, so the value of the precision matte is limited for me anyway. and when I do manually focus, I find the standard Ee-A adequate (though a nice split-image screen would be nice).

I agree. That is kinda of what I was trying to say, I think some people praise the 5D and look down on (so to say) at crop cameras.

That is basically what I was getting at.
