Ok I have the new camera. I've had a 30D for about 18months so I am kind of familiar with the same features except 1. I can't figure out how yo make the * button to let me use it as a focus button as on the 30D. Any and all help will be greatle app.

THX in advance

Read your owners manual, it's a custom function.

On 30D it is Custom Function 4, option 1. Don't know about 40D.

It's a two-step process. Step one is CF 4-1, option 1. This makes the camera function with AF-ON.

Step two is another custom function in the 4 series, I believe CF 4-2 or CF 4-3 (I don't have the camera in front of me at work). It's the one with the option to switch the functions of AF-ON and *.

Right now, I have my 40D focusing with AF-ON, so I haven't taken step 2 yet. I like the positioning of the button and have no immediate plans to add a grip.

Thanks even if you enjoy making people feel small because they can't find or figure somthing out by reading the manual. Not all of us are 2-3 million dollar a year wedding phtog that never gets the wrong lighting or exposer. So for the few of us that are just down right ignorant and are looking for some help from people that have already gone down that road and actually come to this form to help others or be helped I say thank you one and all.

If you are going to make a comment like this you should quote the original post so its obvious who it is directed to.

what does making 2-3million a year have to do with reading a manual? I think reading the manual is the best thing you can do when you get some new gear. Seriously. Spend 15 minutes reading, or spend 2 days in frustration trying to figure things out on your own. I think it was a geniune suggestion.

That is the No 1 reason why so many are having problems with the mk3, you make the time to go though each setting while reading the manual, what suits you may not suit me, it`s all down to the way you work, the camera is only a tool.
