I'm in a real pickle here. I was perfectly happy with my 35/135Ls last week and thought I was set for awhile. Then I sort of stumbled upon a great deal for an 85L last week and jumped on it without actually considering my finances. I mean, I can afford it but I really shouldn't, you know one of those deals. Well it arrived today and I was actually debating not opening the box; instead just putting it on the B&S forum and getting my money back. I think that might have been the best idea I've ever NOT taken because now I don't want to sell her :(

Thoughts on the lens: Wow is this thing made of glass or what! It's like they just filled it to the brim with as much glass as they possibly could. It's pretty heavy in your hand but on the camera it's not too bad. Also, as everyone tried to warn me, the AF is pretty slow. But man once it gets there it's freakin' sweeeeeeet :D Color, contrast, bokeh...you guys all know, no need to rehash. The only question is, do I really need this lens? I don't know/think so :(

First shot. Literally walked outside as the sun was setting and snapped the first thing I saw.

Slow AF? Did you get the original or the II version? The II version was supposed to have much faster AF. From Canon's website: high-speed CPU and optimized algorithms to achieve an autofocus speed approximately 1.8x faster than the original.

The MkII version still has slow AF compared to other lenses. That's a lot of heavy glass the AF mechanism has to move around. It is faster than the original, but not nearly as fast as the 135L or the 35L (the other two legs of the trinity). I just spent two hours shooting with my 85L MKII and it's fine for portraits, glamour, etc., but it's by no means a sports lens.

I bought the original version, the MK I, you know with the slow AF :p I mean, it's not turtle slow but you definitely have to plan the shot. I'm used to the 135L and the 35L which are both pretty quick (esp the 135).

Again, it's nothing I hadn't known about. It's just to actually experience it is something else.
