I have ordered the above and will pick them up when I return to the states in a few weeks. I went straight for Canon´s 100-400 lens as birds are my primary interest and I will continue to use my S3 on "macro" for bugs and flowers for the time being ($$$!). While my S3 has for the most part been a pleasure it´s maximum usable ISO is 200. That´s a long way shy of the 1600 and up I see DSLR users shooting at. Plus the shots I see here and elsewhere taken with that high dollar glass really are a world apart from the p&s. So I guess I will need to learn about "raw". Are there any "complete novice" friendly processing programs out there? I´ve seen Bibble mentioned a few times while poking around in the topic.

Congrats on the kit. I like Breezebrowser for download and RAW processing. Have fun. Welcome to the board.

You will love the combo, just use the included Canon Raw software to get going.
The 40D has great jpgs too.

Enjoy.

I wish I would have had taken the time to find a site like this before I purchased the first of my equipment. Then I wouldn't have tried to make the dRebel/EF 75-300mm work for as long as I did. Then again, had I not found a site like this at all, my credit card bills would be significantly lower.

Great first purchase! Take my advice, give all of you credit cards to your significant other before it is too late!
