Is there that big of a difference in your point of view?

Do you recommend it to others?

Is the weather sealing that cool to have?

How are you liking that 3.0" screen? LOL

just out of interest why is this thread just about those that have upgrade from the 30D. there are people who have updated from the 10D (me) and those that have upgraded from the 20D.

Well since the 40D was released to replace the 30D I was wondering if people saw a hugw difference and what not. From a 10D, 20D, and etc there would be plenty of things different.

and chabooky has a 30d, so is likely to want to know if people found the difference in a similar situation to him.

I did second guess my decision to sell my 30D and 1Dmk2. But since there was no way back (I wasn't going to buy another 30D!), I went with the 40D. No regrets. Love the enhanced finder (FEELS so much better than 30D), better superimposed display, ISO and two-digit buffer counter, 6.5fps feels faster than 5fps by a significant amount, 3" LCD is great, live view is occasionally useful, basically a great camera all around. Like the new menus too. It's a significant upgrade.

As always though, it is an individual decision. Do you need or want these features? I have always ranted about 'useless features' in many things (not just cameras, so many other things in life, software is one example), things that get in my way or simply aren't what I want, and then I don't upgrade. So really: value is in the eye of the beholder. Do you want these additional things? If not, there are PLENTY of 30D and 20D or even 10D owners who are still sticking by their cameras and I totally respect that. On the other hand, if someone wants the new features then they're also entirely entitled to upgrade.

Give it a try if you can, and see whether you like it :)

If all that is holding you back is the 3" screen. Then its not worth it. The AF accuracy, AF speed, AF tracking ability, the 6.5fps for 75 Jpegs (11seconds), brighter VF and softer mirror slap were more then enough to make me do it.

I don't do a lot of chimping though. SO if you are a chimper, then I can see how a 3" inch screen is nice.

Full frame, dude. The 5D is spectacular and a perfect complement to the 30D. My 30D and 1D/1D2 came and went, but the 5D has always been here.. says a lot about the 5D!

Alternatively, if you want to wait for the 5DMk2, which is expected to inherit a lot of the new features, buy the 40D first, and get the 5D2 when it comes out.

Either way you can't go wrong and you'll have a matched pair of cameras with nearly identical controls - and that's a really good thing.

I'll seriously consider the 5D2 when it comes out, but as an existing 5D owner, it will need to be REALLY REALLY good to entice me to upgrade.
